The loss in the value of stocks, bonds and currencies has been widespread and largely indiscriminate. But in the Philippines, the economic impact is muted. The withdrawals made by foreign investors there since mid-May represent less than a tenth of the capital invested there over the last four years. And with one of the youngest populations in the world and strong political leadership, the Philippines is poised for exponential growth.
The Philippines has one of the youngest populations in the world with a median age of just 22. Over the next decade or so it will have the opportunity for supercharged growth powered by a demographic dividend. A burgeoning outsourced business sector, rapid growth in remittances and an ambitious transport infrastructure program will also make important contributions to its economic development. Huge improvements in governance and economic management underpin the bull case.
