Dear Doctor~~

Ellie Marie has spoken to me and suggested that the reason I do not fully understand various, latter-day, office procedures is that I have not had a formal office job in America since Father Bush left the White House~~after which I went off on my own~~internationally~~ and was my own master~~and that a great many of regulations affecting all areas of life have been imposed upon all industries~~to include medicine~~in the time intervening 1993.

Ellie suggests that my view of nit-picking regulations may be accurate enough~~in the generality~~but lacking of any recent direct, personal, tactile, experience~~in the particular.

Ellie Marie thinks that my disenchantment with trying to get a simple prescription filled the past weeks is emblematic of my general knowledge of the strangulation of commerce by ceaseless regulation~but that I view this strangulation from a philosophical, flying above in the sky at high altitude point of vantage, rather than from a real world perspective.

Ellie Marie reminds me that I have myself recently written that~~

“America appears to me to have become~~of late years~~a Nation of beleaguered clerks and pesky, schoolmarmish, librarians~~no one of whom is more powerful than the other~~which means to say that~~everybody is in charge of everybody else and nobody is in charge of anyone else.

This is what is called~~pure democracy~~and it is a disease progressive and, invariably, fatal. The predictable outcome of that diagnosis is imminent, certain, death by national, clerical, strangulation.”

I cannot but approve this note today for posting as Ellie Marie has taken the trouble to quote me in it~~the little minx.

Ellie Marie notes that her little job in estates management is no different on that score than is yours of medicine~trucks full of regulations back up to her door daily~but she emphasizes that she must read them and heed them~as to ignore them might very well cost her~her situation at Christmas.

I guess I understand what all this means~to some sort of vague extent~~so I use this note to make this request~~please send post-haste~~
