Reach out and touch a friend~it’s the charitable thing to do at Christmas~

I am asked~~often~~by the bosses in the charity business at Washington~~the Mecca of the charity industry~~”in your long observation of city life, John Begg~~why do charity fundraisers always fail so miserably?”
 
I say~~
 
Fundraisers, development officers, et sequentia~~in the charity industry~~are salesmen who recoil from the appellation salesman~~so of course they fail at sales because they insist upon believing they are not salesmen~~they insist they are something else–something consecrated or holy ordained of God or simply~~special.  
 
They go to little classes and call their trade a profession~~which it isn’t but I don’t care about that part.  The part I notice~~and mention to the bosses is this~~
 
“What are they going to their little classes to study~~how NOT to raise money?’
 
When they get sacked~~and they always do~~and frequently so~~the bosses are reluctant to hire from the pool of “credentialed fundraisers” with good reason~~and the reason is that such guys refuse to accept that their position is a salesman’s position~~so the bosses are always frustrated and at a loss.
 
As far as I know~~sales is a perfectly respectable, and necessary, avocation~~depending I guess on what one is selling~~but some look down on it~~and, when they look down on it around me~~I remind them that the best paid and worst-paid men in America are all salesmen~~some work in dime stores~~poor men~~some sell computer devices~~Perot, Gates, Jobs, Ellison~~very rich men~~to name but a few~~
 
Another impediment for charity kids is that they use this horrid, synthetic speech that so pollutes the American English language today.  This is a particularly bad thing for charity salesmen who must approach rich men and attempt to get in their wallets because rich men~~lucky, lucky,  duckies~~have sailed through life without being exposed to American synthetic language~~and are nonplussed by its use~~
 
For instance~~rich men do not~~ever “reach out” to anyone~~except perhaps to punch or strangle them~~so never~~ever~~reach out to anybody~~instead~~speak English~~instead~~give them a call~~write them a note~~speak English~~and…attend to this thought~~
 
No rich boy or girl has ever used or heard the term~~high net worth individuals~~it’s a synthetic expression~~principally used by Washington charity whores~~scheming to get into rich pocketbooks~~in an American atmosphere in which the American English language is all but forgotten and instead is~~filled to the gunnels with synthetic expressions~~used solely by people who have never even met anybody who is rich~~
 
I do hope this all helps charity salesmen to do better at their jobs~~or perhaps to take up a new line altogether~~directly after Christmas~~
