    John Begg ~~Karen dear–don’t you fret–all of Washington shakes its collective head and says that Ellie Marie “is simply a Christian martyr–simply a Christian martyr–a Saint consecrated”–for her having to put up with my various–how shall I say– idiosyncrasies–ask Wendy–she is completely convinced that Ellie Marie is a Saint consecrated–I tell Ellie Marie’s fans that while I love Ellie Marie to death–none here–nor Wendy–has the power to consecrate Saints–and Ellie Marie–wise enough to laugh at life’s riddles–simply says “I don’t want to be a Christian Martyr or a Saint–not now at least–that would mean I’d be dead.”

With humans it’s funny because I am old enough to remember when young kids were in a rush to marry to get regular sex and the Church taught that sex in marriage was solely to make babies–in the modern times–one certainly doesn’t have to marry to have sex, Jesus knows, so the only legitimate reason to get married in the modern-day is to make babies~~

Exposition~~

Ours is, of course, a Republican household, but in this little diary of Washington, I have endeavored to give devils their due and, as such, comes now to us,  Mr. Clinton~~sly devil, he.

 As I go down the list of the Presidents noted here, I make note of a number who were very, very successful salesmen.  One such was FDR, to a lessor extent, Jack Kennedy, more so, Mr. Clinton.

~~

Sales is having a sense of the people~~what they want.

~~

Sales is about appearing to satisfy desires in the buyer that oftentimes the buyer doesn’t recognize he has.

~~

Sales capacity is a great gift.

~~

Pointedly, it is the sine qua non~~without sales~~and salesmanship~~nothing moves.

~~

Friends of mine who look upon the craft of politics as some sort of religious vocation are askance when I hold that having a keen sense of “retail politics,” is a very desirable trait to have.

~~

After all, politics in a democratic republic is just that~~and little else~~it’s sales.  It’s selling yourself as though you were a commodity to the people and having them buy it.

~~

This sounds craven to those who think that politicians have a calling to the cloth, but right-minded men understand full well that a successful politician is first and foremost a salesman~~and as a good salesman~~he is always ready to stand another round~~to re-package and~~to re-sell the same commodity~~all over again~~himself.

~~

I am in the other Party but I will say that politics on the retail level is something that a budding, aspiring politician had better know in his bones~~or else~~off to the monastery he ought go~~and double quick.

~~

President Clinton understood all of this in his bones–in his DNA~~he was a world-class salesman~~not more~~not less~~

~~

In the end, he understood his job and did it very well.~~

~~

On this list of a dozen Presidents, he is very close to, if not at the top of , the dozen salesman named in this personal note of remembrance.~~

Racehorse extrodinaire~~Alydar~~

 What follows is a book review about a racehorse who had sex so often~~it~~quite literally~~killed him~~my surmise is that he derived little to zero pleasure from sex.~~

I am not competent to say if or no animals derive pleasure from sex–or if it’s all instinct with them but I can say that I know for certain that~~

As any girl can readily attest~~sex is like anything else in life~~when it becomes your job~~it ceases to have any kick to it~~

Book Review of Wild Ride~~@8.5.2013~~

Alydar was one of the premier race horses and stud horses of our lifetimes.~~

A magnificent racing thrill, in the breeding shed after his career, he ginned out more Grouped winners than anyone of recent memory~~save Seattle Slew.~~

~~

His life was tragic as he became a shattered chess piece in a sordid game of bait and switch and physical abuse as a stallion.~~

~~

Gorgeous Calumet Stables~~beloved to all in the business had fallen into the most disreputable of hands~~men desperate to both steal money and to keep one step ahead of a fast approaching racing authority.~~

~~

In her wonderful book, Wild Ride, Ann Auerbach captures both the beauty and savagery of the highest level of the thoroughbred racing business~an enterprise very little known to outsiders not born to it.~~

~~

Auerbach likewise knows very well the breeding side of the business–a still more terrifying, rarefied and ruthless enterprise than is the racing sport itself.~~

~~

It can be said with alacrity~but in no sense jocularly~that the stallion Alydar~~died from too much sex.~~

~~

That may sound to many readers as the ideal way to leave this orb but sex is like anything else~~

If you have to do it all the time~~it’s work~~and nobody likes to work~~not man~~not beast~~

A new dawn peeks out to the Americans~~bringing with her a leader~~follow her~~our new American Dawn~~

Harry–this is a most interesting expostulation on the peoples of New England and of the French Canadians whose blood I likewise share– and of the Americans themselves in recent times.

I too am impressed by the humble and go-get-’em attitude of the American Yankee.
~
While I am of mixed blood lines–to include a dosage of the Southland–Yankee ingenuity and hard work and lack of complaint in adversity has always much impressed me.
~
America could use more of that and America most particularly could use a public recognition in her politics of that humble work ethic and I think that the right, proper and winning horse and jockey to set things right again in this country begins with the sincere statement~ at the starter’s gate~ at the outset~ of a Presidential campaign that:
~
“I am a man of very little importance~now willing to take on a job for the citizens that is largely symbolic and my government will be guided by 3 tenets alone:
~
Protect the people.
Facilitate commerce.
Leave the people the hell alone.”
~
I think such a program would win election without any use of the whip but the issue is~~
~
Where is such a man to ride this winning horse?
~
Is he from Maine, from French Canada, from the Southland~~from where–if I were a younger man with younger arteries I would take on such a campaign~~lamentably I am neither of those.
~
I do hope such a man presents himself to the Americans~~who are rightly and sorely aggrieved at looking on what the city of my birth–Washington–has become–
~
my city is supposed to be a servant but she has become instead a gluttonous monster.
