Ronald Wilson Reagan~Just a smidgen less short of God than all the others~He spoiled us~

I worship at the altar of no man but God Jesus.

Here on earth, well short of heaven, we must now live.

I reflect that the Americans indulge a whimsically silly, faux Deification, of various public servants who all fall laughably so short of God.

And, yet, here on earth you and I live and we yearn to see men lead us who are just a smidgen less short of God than are all the others.

The corruption at Washington today is so ubiquitous, so all-pervasive, that I still shake my head and wonder, as I read again his words to us today, how Mr. Reagan was ever elected President in 1980.

I worship at the altar of no man but God Jesus.

~~

Here on earth, well short of heaven, we must now live.

~~

I reflect that the Americans indulge a whimsically silly, faux Deification, of various public servants who all fall laughably so short of God.

~~

And, yet, here on earth you and I live and we yearn to see men lead us who are just a smidgen less short of God than are all the others.

~~

The corruption at Washington today is so ubiquitous, so all-pervasive, that I still shake my head and wonder, as I read again his words to us today, how Mr. Reagan was ever elected President in 1980.

~~

Reagan most certainly could not be elected today. He was willing to take on all the elements of the corrupt machine~~not just one or two~~all of them.

~~

He is of course sorely missed today~~all the more so because I can’t think that he, or anyone even remotely like him, will ever appear again on the American political stage.

~~

It is so sad to reflect how much America has changed since 1980.  For instance, had Mr. Romney in 2012 faced the same American demographic, Mr. Romney would have won election~~massively, and in numbers far greater than did Mr. Reagan in 1980.

~~

Mr. Reagan could not be elected today

~~

A remarkable sea change has occurred in those short 35 years.

~~

This sea change I cannot possibly think is for the better for America and Her culture.

~~

Sad above all to consider that we are left now with men who fall farther and farther short of God than ever before

~~

In a way, Mr Reagan spoiled us, as he put into our minds the notion that America could be a better place and that the corruption at this city could, with hard work and dedication, be turned ’round.

~~

We yearn for him more and more but we know in our hearts that he is not only gone from us but that wonderful promise he held out for us to have a better life free of Washington’s invidious corruptions, left forever with him.

~~

We know that our dream for his return in another man’s form can be ever only but a dream and we feel saddened very much by that realization.

~~

Yes, Mr. Reagan spoiled us.

~~

Most likely forever

~~

But God Jesus, it was grand to be spoiled by likes of him

Depression is the ultimate self-indulgence~

~~

Truman thought that to be alcoholic was the only requisite to being a writer

~~

Silly boy, he got it all wrong and ended up both alcoholic and depressed and not a writer, as, Truman discovered that

~~~
When alcoholism is simply not enough anymore
~~
Depression is the ultimate self-indulgence
~
Writing the ultimate happiness
~~
The Americans are the most self-indulgent of  all God’s creatures and their disease of choice is~of course~depression~as, after all~depression is the ultimate self-indulgence
~~
Yet, depression~as good as it may make the Americans feel, is a prison.
Never stop writing
~~
Nobody truly enjoys prison, at least I don’t think it possible to enjoy a prison. Yet again, just how do the Americans break free of the prison of self-indulgent depression?
Papa broke free, but his jail break was very messy
Papa was a very good writer and yet for him alcoholism was not enough
So, Papa took what we call in the American Southland and is likewise called in European aristocratic circles
~~
The gentleman’s way out
~~
Effective, swift and a family tradition, Papa’s jailbreak was very messy
~~
I am sure that there are any number of ways to break free if one really wants to be free.
~~
As for me, I early recognized that Writers have the potentiality to be the freest men on all of God’s green.
~~
True it is that Truman, Jimmy and Papa were very sad men, and they all understood the warm, comforting glow of self-indulgent depression and they ignored their writing to indulge in depression
~~
There are those who say to this thought of mine~to spend day and night writing
~~
Fine and well said, but you won’t ever make sixpence writing
Perhaps not~but what price liberty, America~what price must we pay to be free, and above all
To be happy?
Are we too old now to be free?
To be Happy?
Consider that…..
~~
 When Socrates was sixty years old, Plato, then a youth of twenty came to him as a pupil. Plato, giant of philosophy, likewise developed a style that became, far later, the modern novel as well as the modern essay.  Of which:
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne was one of the most influential writers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre, and commonly thought of as the father of modern skepticism.  Of which:
“On the highest throne in the world, we still sit only on our own bottom.”
Arthur Christopher Benson (24 April 1862 – 17 June 1925) was an English essayistpoet, and author and the 28th Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.  From Mr. Benson–true words for all of us who found school stultifying in terminus.   Of which:
I am sure it is one’s duty as a teacher to try to show boys that no opinions, no tastes, no emotions are worth much unless they are one’s own. I suffered acutely as a boy from the lack of being shown this.”
John Daniel Begg, born at Washington, 4th January, 1952.  Of which:
 “With all the remarkable words to use in the English language, well, why not just let’s use all of them?”
Since I was a wee lad, people of all sorts have told me that I had some sort of gift, or the other, with words.  A novelist I was to be, I suspect.
Or an orator maybe—pray God not that—as that suggests something to do with politics, an avocation that Frank Roosevelt’s mother, Sara, unconstrained by the burdens of public opinion and tart-tongued as few today are, most correctly described as being no fit job for a white man.
I guess friends and foes alike were correct then, as now, in my autumn years, I have discovered that I am, I like being and others like and in equal measure laud and applaud, an essayist.
All along, I’d thought that with old age would come my grand classic novels. Yet, I find that an essayist can have, in a brief bit, a similar freedom and effect—perhaps even more so.
When I arise in the morning, I go about the city and, noticing things that catch my fancy write about them and dutifully quote others who have written on topics germane to my whimsical discoveries.
Today, I had a chat of many colors and hues with an old school lad, Billy, of whom I am inordinate fond, but likewise frustrated as he is a lawyer and, as with all the men in that line, oftentimes “simply too busy to talk.”  I wonder what these boys are so busy doing.
Billy did give me a moment today and we discussed essay writing and how to make money from it. My word!!  Hard times have come a knockin’ here.
Since early youth, I’ve gotten a severe headache and become despondent by talk of money as my Nana maternal drummed into me that “talk of money is both boring and impolite, a dreadful combination of negatives.”
Billy did get a bit of a laugh from my observation that both the novelist and essayist are the freest man on earth as we can, flick of the wrist; simply kill people we don’t like.  It’s a remarkably fun exercise.  Remarkably.
I said “Billy, for instance, if I do not like you and I am a novelist or an essayist, I simply create a character just like you and kill you without any legal ramifications whatsoever—consider all the dismal briefs filing and courtroom vaudeville acts that would spare you.”
My dears, consider how much delight we can all have with such fully free rein to dispatch, embarrass, mock, even seduce the pretty young wives, of our foes.  And likewise of course, to be pleasant to people if you happen to wake up the right side in the morning.
In this physically beautiful yet ambiently nauseating village of my birth, men speak of who is powerful and who is not in Mr. Ferris’ Wheel this day at Washington, but who could debate the supreme power of simply being able to kill your enemies in a page or two, without any legal ramifications whatsoever?
Yes, the novelist can do away with any number of nettlesome creatures in his life—but it often takes him many pages to do so.  But, ah!!–the essayist can do the very same thing with a slight touch of the keys!!
Who here reading doesn’t daily think to himself “I could just shoot that girl?”  We all do, all day long, many times.
When one lives in the singularly rarefied world of literary invention—think it and, hey presto– it is done!  Such freedom!  Such immense latitude to form the world in one’s image and likeness!!
As boys, Billy and I were told that Plato was far more than a foundation philosopher—he was likewise an essayist and a sort of novelist.  Brief essays can accomplish the precise result as do longer novels, but get to do so very quickly.
One of the more amusing Washington cottage industries is the cribbing of other men’s work and calling it one’s own. I know personally any number of men who do nothing else but crib.
They are paid, not well, but adequately, for cribbing and, some days, I am asked, “John, not for attribution but mano y mano—do you think Chris is a good writer—yes or no please?”
This question perplexes me, even irritates, and as we are in the midst of our Lenten time and are anticipating the resurrection of our Lord on Easter morning.  I must tell the unvarnished truth—so I answer “how the devil do I know—to my best knowledge, he’s never written anything.”
Perhaps it was with Chris in mind that our Montaigne wrote:~~
“I quote others only to better express myself.”~~
You guys are too young to remember the riots==and i do mean riots– I grew up dead center in the middle of it all–worse than any civil rights upheavals– that took place right in this city on a virtually weekly basis over Vietnam and most particularly the draft–pretty rich boys were in the line of fire~~
~~
~~.  The war machine adapts–it is infinitely adaptable–the trouble with Vietnamese war was not dollar cost or the righteousness of policy but rather the exposure of pretty little rich kids to the battlefield.
~~
War Machine Solution–end the draft–end the protests, end all opposition–
~
After that, fight wars whenever and wherever the machine wants to dine–endless possibilities–no criticisms~~
~~
Further solution–reinstate the draft–and the war in Afghanistan– and all the others– are over by this weekend–and there won’t be anymore of them started either.~~
Misadventures of cat versus bird is as old as time~and does not lend to political meddling~
Image
Naughty bits, well perhaps, but cats hunting birds is really not the forum for political reformation.  There is a message in that for us someplace~~let’s try to sort out what that message may be~~
~~
While my Party, earlier called the “Party of the thinking man,” has historically been known for being steadfast it’s beliefs~~whatsoever they may be~~despite all costs~~today is a Party at war with Herself~~actually a good and a healthy condition in a Republic~~
~~
Meanwhile, The Democrats, yes, those people,  have, some years ago, fallen off a cliff into a political polar vortex that, at bottom, leaves the Democrats with no dissent among its factions and an agreed, singular and religious vocation to always look~~despite all costs~~simply, ridiculous~~simply ridiculous~~
~~
Reading today of the, very likely last ever, Democratic egghead to seek the Captain’s chair, Governor Adlai Ewing Stevensen, II, I came across this note to share, about what it was like, seemingly centuries ago, yet in reality just yesterday, when a man of considerable charm and wit was able to hold high office~~
~~
In Illinois~~
~~
Yes, in Illinois, I said that and I meant that~~
~~
After having chosen for sidekicks in both 1952 and 1956, two flagrant segregationalists and unregenerate racialists, Adlai was decimated both times by Ike, carrying only the States that comprised the Old Confederacy.~~
~~
Not fettered by those mishaps, Adali went home to Illinois to become Governor and deal with the really taxing political troubles of his day~~
~~
Adlai proved adroit at such tasks and to be a popular public speaker, gaining a national reputation as an intellectual, with a self~deprecating sense of humor to match~~
~~
Zounds!!~~remember them~~politicians with a sense of humor?~~
~~
To Wit~~
~~
When the Illinois state legislature passed a bill (supported by bird lovers) declaring that cats roaming unescorted was a public nuisance.~~
~~
Adlai vetoed the bill, and sent this public message regarding the veto:~~
~~
“It is in the nature of cats to do a certain amount of unescorted roaming…the problem of cat versus bird is as old as time. If we attempt to solve it by legislation who knows but what we may be called upon to take sides as well in the age-old problem of dog versus cat, bird versus bird, or even bird versus worm. In my opinion, the State of Illinois and its local governing bodies already have enough to do without trying to control feline delinquency. For these reasons, and not because I love birds the less or cats the more, I veto and withhold my approval from Senate Bill No. 93.”~~
~~
Can you imagine, dears, any Democrat today, consumed as those children are, in being locked in their death spiral of righteous polar vortex, having or even understanding~~a sense of humor?~~
~~
Heavens NO~~
~~
As for my Party, consumed as She is with internecine squabbling and too taken with, hyperbolically stated, “Serious Constitutional issues,” how likely is She to care about such a thing as being lighthearted?~~
~~
Hell, NO~~
~~
We very much need a Presidential candidate who can be light of heart and even, perish, make fun of himself~~yes, of himself~~can you imagine that ?~~
He says out loud what many people think deep down, and what the politicians refrain from saying because they are either too demagogic or too chicken. Money, myth, merit, school and social class in America~
The Americans are a hopelessly young people~~and that to a large extent drives discussions about education and its place in American life.   The Americans are forever fumbling about trying to sort out their place in society~~trying to guess questions such as ~~just what does being elite in America~~mean?~~
~~
There are different factors at play in what are, appropriately considered a number of different, and on first blush, self-contradictory, forces at play in all this.~~
~~
One of the least mentioned is the shameless, truly shameless, price gouging at private American colleges and prep schools~~and not simply Ivy League schools or their feeder prep schools.  This goes unremarked in the press services, but is certainly well-known to all parents who start plotting children’s education~~sometimes before their birth.~~
~~
This gouging cannot be sustained and ought not to be sustained.  What many today forget is that the current fascination with these special schools is very recent, and became, in my lifetime, solely the fixation of middle class hustlers who want their kids to go to these schools for really only one reason–so that the kids will earn more money than do kids who do not.~~
~~
Trouble is~~many I know who in recent years have attended these schools don’t make very much money at all~~so, from a cost accounting perspective–just what precisely are the middle classes investing in by sending their kids to these elite schools?~~
~~
America is about money~~solely.~~
~~
There used to be a way to determine which preps were for the rich and which for the future servants of the rich–in those days, I could tell you by where you prepped if you were going to be a servant to the rich class or from the rich class itself.~~
~~
Not anymore–In my lifetime Columbia, Hav~ad, Yah~le and the others have become almost exclusively schools for middle class hustlers who think that sending their kids to these places will insure that the kids later are rich.~~
~~
In my family, my maternal side was all Columbia and Barnard.  On my father’s side which was, until the Depression rich to the point of impossibility, the sons never went to college at all–they realized that they would inherit the kingdom and simply hire lawyers, doctors, accountants and fund managers~~while the sons themselves lived a life of indolence and ease.~~
~~
Paternal Nana told me, in a troubling recollection for me today recalled here, that the doctor I liked very much and whose mind interested me, could not stay for dinner because “doctors are servants and we are social people.”~~
~~
That is an era that, largely, does not exist any more~~for good or ill.~~
~~
The ubiquity of middle class hopes and dreams are the customer base of the elite schools,~~
~~
The customer is being hoodwinked–on a cost benefit basis there is no justification at all to go up to Hav~ad or Yah~le or Columbia in order to later get rich or marry the right girl because your classmates in the main are middle class just like you~~kids feverishly on the make.~~
~~
Not very long ago the schools now called the Ivy League had a deuce of a trouble getting rich boys to attend.  In desperation, rank desperation, these schools opened the flood gates based upon not social class but rather on the basis of that horrid synthetic expression called today~~meritocracy~~a word with no meaning–but now widely accepted in America by the professional middle classes who dominate the nation in her day-to-day life.~~
~~
There were predictable consequences to all this~~most startling~~and altogether unappreciated in America today, was that meritocracy immediately flooded the elite schools with Jews~~which I can assure you was not the intent of the schools themselves but was unavoidable consequence of  the coming of meritocracy.~~
~~
Jews are not smarter than are others but many of them teach their children what they need to do to get ahead–while other groups generally do not~~meaning today–get into the professions by attending what are now very erroneously called elite schools.~~
~~
Trouble again is that elite in America means inheriting, making or marrying money~~and, it becomes increasingly apparent that Hav~ad and Yah~le and Colombia and so forth~~ are tickets principally to a reasonably comfortable middle class professional life~~and no more~~not much to do with being, or getting, rich.~~
~~
Jack~~
Girls in the altogether~
Image
 Holy Sister Don Basco~~clad appropriately for her vocation~~and it turns out likewise so to conform to the new Internet regulations~~released just this evening~~
~~
On the first day of first grade at Saint Jane Frances De Chantal Catholic grammar school, called by anyone of any social background~~CH~NAL~~Paul McKenna, Martin Kane, Patrick Kelley, Eugene O’Neil,Junior and I were seated in the front of our first class when there appeared before our eyes a midget nun~~clad head to feet in black, save for her face~that ringed in white~~the Spainish girls call these Holy nuns penguinos~~who declared, to our astonishment~~
 ~
 “I am Holy Sister Don Basco, I maybe small~~but so is the atom bomb.”
 ~
 That put an end to any and all interest in education for me~~forever.  All I could think was how to get out of that place as soon as I could~~forever~~
 ~
 On the way home from that first grade, all boys mentioned gathered around Paul McKenna~~already deemed by all of us as being what we came to know was called intelligent or something like that.~~
 ~~
 The others demanded to know “What is Holy Sister Don Basco and what is an atom bomb?”~~
 ~~
By Italian blood~~Mia Mommy a Milano~~I was already, at 5 years, set out to be a master criminal~~or so I thought.  Life always disappoints us.~~I went on to work in politics~~same dance~~different dance hall~~
 ~
At events, I pulled Paul McKenna aside from the others and said to him, very brusquely “Fuck that~~how long does it last?”
~
 “How long does what last–Don Basco–a full year, I’m afraid, Begg~~a full year~~
 ~~
 “Not the midget, McKenna~~the school~~how long does it last~~
 ~~
 “All of it?”~~
 ~~
 “Yes, all of it, goddamnit”~~
 ~~
 “We need a smoke,” McKenna told me~~
 ~~
 I’ll pause here to freely admit that I am recognized by nobody as the world’s leading authority on life in America in the 1950’s~~that would be our Mistress Karen~~The Boss~~of whom~~a bit more later~~but I was kicking around back then and I think my experiences were a tad different from those of the Boss~~
 ~~
 Paul McKenna and I headed to our little citadel in a dry creek bed in the wall of which there was a sort of cave~~far from the prying eyes of parents~~
 ~~
 We both fired up a Phillip Morris blunt end and sucked deeply on them~~
 ~~
 “Sixteen years~~if you’re very lucky”~~McKenna said ruefully~~
 ~~
 “Sixteen years?~~sixteen years?~~what did we do~~we’re only 5 years old”~~
 ~~
“If you’re very lucky”
 ~~
 “Very lucky?”~~
 ~~
 McKenna began leafing through a frayed copy of what in those days was called a “Girly magazine”~~and believe me, Gertrude~~it’s wasn’t what you’re thinking~~not in the least~~
 ~~
 The Italians are an impatient people, overbearing, harsh, direct and much desirous of solutions, not conversation~~I swatted the girly magazine away~~
 ~~
 “Yep–sixteen years~if you’re very lucky”~~
 ~~
 “How do we get out of this?”  Italians learn at the breast that “There is a way around everything, McKenna.”~~
 ~~
 “We don’t get out of this~study hard and apply yourself.”~~
~~
“Yeah?~and if I study hard and apply myself?’
 ~~
 “Oh, then you get to stay for 20 or more years”~~
 ~~
 “That’s a reward?~that’s a life sentence!!”~~
 ~~
 “It sure is.”
 ~~
 Years on, McKenna went up to Hav~ad and came home Summa, as~~
 ~~
 “There ain’t no Rs in Hav~ad, wee laddies~~
 ~~
 Years still on later, McKenna, sent out Summa from Hav-ad~~drives a carpet truck and installs carpets in Taos, New Mexico with a 17-year-old Mexican illegal~~so, sorry, Karen~~a Mexican “undocumented”~~we must say these things correctly, at least I’m hearing that all sides tonight~~
 ~~
 What I will say here is that McKenna’s illegal undocumented is a very pretty little thing but looking at bloodstock as I do with a well-trained eye, my fear is that those girls “will run to fat later, McKenna”~~
 ~~
 “Fat?  That’s OK~~I’ll just get another”~~
 ~~
 I’d always thought that it is surely myself and not McKenna, sent out from Hav~vad~~Summa~~who was responsible for the Navy attitude around here~~but of late, I am beginning to wonder on that~~
 ~~
 I wasn’t sent out Summa from anywhere and while I did do my 16 year bit~~it would be most disingenuous of me to say I attended any school~~for as soon as I could climb and pick locks~~I was out of every school I was supposed to be attending~~
 ~~
 I did graduate~~Not Summa~~Not Hav~ad~~and I still can’t sort out how that could be as I was never at school~~ever.~~I think I read that it’s called “grading on a curve.”
 ~~
But then you and I both know the sort of boy Hav~ad gins out these days~~
 ~~
 I’ve likewise held any number of silly little jobs~~and likewise run off from all of them~~lickedity~~spilt~~fast~~
 ~~
 Of late date, convalescent and in dotage, I’ve discovered writing and have a ball doing it but I’m informed tonight that I can neither write, be taken seriously or run for President as some have suggested as~~some say–and truly so~~if I ran I’d come a winner~as I haven’t any sort of hard act to follow there~~
 ~~
 All this, I think, is down to my having not “taken girls seriously”~~
 ~~
 I went to see Ellie Marie~~I always go to see Ellie Marie~although she doesn’t like it very much~~
 ~~
I said “Ellie Marie~~I’m astounded and~~I don’t astound”~~
 ~~
 “I’d never thought girls wanted to be taken as serious”~~
 ~~
 “I’d rather thought that girls wanted to be special.”~~
 ~~
 Ellie Marie takes great pains with me and subscribes to the maxim that “success in life is principally down to taking great pains with other people even if they are people~~perhaps especially if they are people~~you don’t much like”~~
 ~~
 Ellie Marie explained it all~~
 ~~
 “The principal trouble with you John Begg is that you know far, far too much about girls than any boy is ever supposed to know”~~
 ~~
 “Why is that such a problem~after all, I’ve studied them closely for many, many years~~I came back Summa~~I think~~in Girls”~~
  ~~
 “John Begg~you are the most clever writer and people get jealous of that but~~you’ve taken an annoying habit of taking pictures of girls in the altogether”~~
~~
 “In the what?”~~
 ~~
“In the altogether”~~
~~
 “You know, nudey pictures~you won’t be taken seriously by your audience if you persist in showing girls in the altogether.”~~
 ~~
 “Goddamnit Ellie, it’s a base lie~~I’ve never taken or sent out into the world  a single picture of girls in the altogether in my life~~it’s a base lie.”~~
~~
Girls are a scream–they use the expressions~~lingerie model, swimsuit model, soft core pornography and XXX hard-core pornography interchangeably~by which is meant there isn’t any difference between the one and the other one~~that is~~that they are all the same thing~~
~~
I on the other hand think that “if things are different~~well, they just cannot be the same”~~
 ~~
 “You simply can’t do it anymore, dear”~~
 ~~
 “Why not?”~~
 ~~
 “You’ve led a very sheltered and privileged life~~girls are now equal or something like that~~I mean if you’re going to have a go at the White House~~girls will take offense maybe”~~
 ~~
 “What?”~~
 ~~
“I’d make a great President”~~
 ~~
“That’d be different for sure~~How do you intend to do that?”
 ~~
“I’d do just 3 things as President~~
 ~~
Protect the people
Facilitate commerce
And leave the people the hell alone~~
~~
 “That’s cute but you have to take girls seriously~~they insist upon that I’m afraid, dear–that is if you want to be taken seriously as a Presidential candidate.”
~~
 Taken seriously?~~do you know what is meant in my line when you hear that a Presidential candidate is “taken seriously.”~~
 ~~
 “No, what?”
 ~~
 “It means the Democrats know he’s a loser.”~~
 ~~
“So, you want to clown around as usual?”~~
 ~~
“A clown?~~I ask you~~What do we have in there now?”
 ~~
“Well, I know but girls are very touchy about this equality business these days~very touchy”~~
~~
 “Hang them all~~high~~I don’t give a toss for lesbian girls”~~
~~
“It’s not just lesbians anymore, John~~real girls think they’re equal to boys too~they passed a law about it, I think.”~~
~~
 “NO!!”~~
~~
Same thing for Negroes~~
~~
Leave OFF!!~~
~~~
Fags too~~and lesbians~~
~~
“Democrats~~they did all this~~I knew it~~I can smell them from here”~~
 ~~
 “Even some Republican girls want to be taken seriously and be equal or something like that~~to boys.”~~
 ~~
 “Balderdash, Ellie Marie, balderdash.”~~
~~
“Ellie Marie~~God’s children are not all equal~~that’s just the point~~Democrats cooked up that kettle of fish about everybody being equal~~they say that  everybody is equal~~only they’re not all equal~~don’t you remember your G&S~~”If everybody’s somebody~~than nobody’s anybody?”
 ~~
I stood up to have a think~~
 ~~
 “When people ask me where’d the time go~~I mean what have you done with yourself for 62 years, John Begg~~ I say to them~~
~~
 “I’VE BEEN THINKING“~~
 ~~
 “For 62 years?”~~
 ~~
 “Yes, Perhaps, longer.”
 ~~
Aristotle tells us the highest attainment of man is to spend his whole day~~THINKING~~
 ~~
 “Aristotle?”~~
 ~~
 “Yes, he was a teacher or something like that.  Rather well-known, I think.”~~
 ~~
 “I thought you’d detested school?”~~
 ~~
 “Oh, I DID~~Oh, yes, I DID.~~what the devil does school have to do with thinking or with Aristotle?”~~
 ~~
 Ellie Marie, as with most girls, has little time for intense concentration~~except for things she cares about~~which are very rarely the things I care about.  I could tell she was bored with our dialogue and I backed off except to say this~~~
 ~~
 I’d never noticed, not once, that girls wanted to be taken seriously~~I thought that girls wanted to be special~~or am I wrong about that?
 ~~
 All this story inspired~~can that be the right word~~yes, inspired~~ in a classical sense~~by a bit of silly badminton between myself and others respecting  my showing  girly slides of girls being in “the altogether, ” or as someone said~~”being childish by showing their succulent backsides”~~
 ~~
 I must say that I can’t think how Ellie Marie or any of the others in this dance have ever even heard the expression “In the altogether.”  It’s a very antique, and I think is, or at least, was~~a colloquial expression my stepmother and some of her girlfriends used to use~~but my step mother was A Goddamn GERMAN for Christ’s sake~~
 ~~
 Boy A Howdy, now!!~~
 ~~
Girls are so touchy about this that they pay me less than no mind when I say that these girls in my little article are shown looking~~not at their succulent bottoms but~~rather~~over their shoulders back into the past to the Golden Age of America~~the 1950s~~
 ~~
 We pick up the trail of these backsides here~~

The girls are looking back at a Golden past in America of the 1950’s that you have maybe forgotten, or never knew about, but that I never can forget. As an aside– Who the devil wants to be taken seriously–again–I am not a Democrat–I am a free white man who gets to smile and laugh and say just what I want just how I want to say it–many people want me to run because of my writing–most of which you haven’t looked at–and I thought it an OK idea for a lark–I’ve been encouraged to run all my life and now, in my dotage, I thought hey, now–who could not be a better act than the show now playing–but even little Ellie Marie is constantly line-editing my work with an eye to pleasing the thought police–so I suppose that the money lenders in the temple down here who shout aloud that we are allowed to consider Clinton or Rubio in 2016 and nobody else~~are likely correct as–everybody has bought into the double talk~~and you and Ellie Marie and Wendy and Danny-O will get to pretend that a race between dead 2 horses is a race worth going to see~~

 Agriculture Secretary: Government Will Not Wait For Congress, Laws In Implementing Obama Climate Plan

February 5, 2014 by

81 28

1 181

During a press conference on Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the unilateral creation of new “climate action hubs” that will be placed in seven locations around the country.

“On the heels of passage of the farm bill, the administration will take executive action to help farmers, ranchers and rural communities combat climate change and adapt to extreme weather and other damage it causes,” a White House official said in an email ahead of Wednesday’s announcement.

The hubs will link a network of universities, nonprofits and Federal and State agencies to help further the President’s climate change agenda without legislative help.

“These climate action hubs are really part of the president’s climate action plan and its directive of us to actually act, not wait for Congress, not wait for laws to be passed, but to do it on our own,” Vilsack said at the White House.

According to the official, the new Regional Hubs for Risk Adaptation and Mitigation to Climate Change are designed to address fires, invasive pests, floods and droughts that environmentalists deem products of climate change on a regional basis.

Asked why the hubs were created without Congressional input, Vilsack said that Administration officials feel it is time to do everything possible to address climate change without Congressional gridlock getting in the way.

“As the president has said repeatedly, if there is an opportunity to work with Congress, we will work with Congress, and we did,” Vilsack said. “We’ve been waiting a while for Congress to work on climate. Fair enough. There are multiple reasons why they haven’t. But in the meantime, we’re going to take action because 51 percent of the land mass of the United States is a lot of land. It’s over 1.2 billion acres of land.”

He added, “I think we’re trying to work with Congress when we can and when they can’t or won’t, we’re going to continue to act. That’s what I think the American public wants us to do.”

The hubs will be located in Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Colorado, Oklahoma, Oregon and New Mexico. Sub-hubs will exist in Michigan, Puerto Rico and California.~~

The codification of caprice and its aftermath of rule by whimsy

An essay

by

John Daniel Begg

These words from Washington are occasioned by the ongoing, serious and very distressing rift between the Administration and the Church the flash point for which respecting issues of contraception. There are a number of levels at which this debate can be joined but it strikes the writer that the Administration’s position that the Executive can, by fiat, simply ordain changes in private Church policy because he feels like it,suggests logical consequences likely not anticipated or intended by the Executive and his supporters. Regarded properly, this debate is not about a particular disagreement. Properly understood, it is, by extension of logic, about morality.

~

Fiat rule, among other very nasty things, smacks of Royalism, dictatorship and governmental absolutism.Fiat rule is itself governed by caprice, seasoned by mere whimsy and sparks the harrowing abnegation of civilized legal process and of morality itself. All of these things, in turn, obviate against the possibility of having a civilized society. And, that’s not good news.

~

The merits of the particular argument lines thus far put forth by the opposing sides left to one side for a moment, it appears clear enough that, for the Executive to lay claim to such powers of fiat governance, occasions the observer to think a bit about both historical and present day parallels that are troubling indeed.

~

Fiat government is government by caprice and raw force. Lamentably, history is replete with sad and alarming parallels. The reader is asked to consider carefully the instant and longer term ramifications of Executive intervention based upon the notion that “I’ll do it because, well, I feel like it.” This is not a new affectation. Absolute monarchs lived, and effectively do yet live, by the credo “I will it therefore it will be done.”

~

Consider please the implications of a society in which from the top down the message is that my actions are in the main governed by the dictum: “I will do what I feel like.” Man generally agrees not to rob banks and shoot the girls behind the counter. Such agreement is part of a generally accepted social compact between the government and its citizens. Yet, some clearly think that if they feel like doing so, it’s perfectly fine. Daily evidence that this is so can be seen in the newspapers. Banks are routinely robbed and the girls likewise routinely shot during the robberies. All right-minded men would agree that a social construct such as that, driven as it is by mere caprice, is both dangerous and invidious to society. That is why the flip side of the prevailing social compact harshly punishes cavalier bank robbers and murderers. Yet, many men feel they are law unto themselves. It’s perfectly fine to rob money in Wall Street, to cheat, to lie, to lay waste to other nations in savage war and exploitation because, put to the quick, well, “I just feel like it.”

~

The rule of whimsy has harrowing historical connotations stretching back to man’s abrupt, and jolting, egress from the Garden. Comparatively recent flights of whimsy are downright frightening. Consider, Russia. In that great, yet often very sad, country, I am sure that the last Czar of the Russians, Nicholas II, smitten with the heady elixir of absolute, unchecked and “divine” power, thought it just the right move to unleash his Cassocks to butcher the Jews and other innocents of his Empire to quiet social unrest when the population was visited, as it very often was, with flood, famine and pestilence. Quite clearly, he felt likedoing that. Later, Mr. Stalin appeared to think it his prerogative to butcher and enslave virtually everyone in sight. I am absolutely sure he felt like doing that. The Americans today fret and make faces about Mr. Putin behaving in a manner tyrannical, and perhaps he does, but I am sanguine that Mr. Putin feels unfettered to do so because it catches his fancy and he “just feels like doing it.”

~

While the incumbent American Executive does not appear to us Czarist, Stalinist or a Mr. Putin, we feel it necessary to issue this cautionary: His recent, and apparently serious, flirtation with the notion that his office confers upon him the authority to codify his caprices and to be unfettered in his whimsy is very dangerous territory to enter. To cultivate such vanities comes at a very high social price. He ought to consider the logical corollaries. They are these: If you act in a manner suggestive of the mindset of these three mentioned Russian leaders, in logical construct, what is really to prevent any citizen of this Republic from doing whatsoever he “feels like?” Surely, the Executive is sage enough to know that people learn lessons from observing the actions of their elders and leaders. After all, the Executive has young children and must daily see that they watch their parents carefully and draw conclusions from what they see their parents doing.

~

Children, we all know, need very little coaching to adopt with alacrity a keen and ready aptitude for doing just what they “feel like.” We do live in a democracy, lessons are noted by the citizen and, most particularly by youngsters, and those lessons ought appropriately be sound lessons involving making good, and not selfish, choices.

~

Respecting democracy, the incumbent Executive and, most particularly his supporters, would do well to consider this element of the case if they are unmoved by listed arguments of logic against their codification of caprice: what happens when their caprice no longer stirs the drink? What happens when they are out of power? Do they feel cheered by the notion of their opponent’s fiatwhimsy and caprice holding sway in another day–not too far off? You see, when one opens the ball on the sort of capricious and whimsical mindset cautioned against here, one must make serious consideration of what will happen when men who one finds disagreeable hold all the high trumps. These men likely will not “feel like” wearing the current fashions. Then, the incumbent and his followers will have to adjust to what it “feels like” to wear outdated cloth. Will they like that—I doubt it? Yet, gravy is, as for the goose, so for the gander.

~

This last is perhaps the most important lesson here. If the precedent thus far established by the Executive to codify his caprices is left to stand, the Americans would do very well to consider what the logical corollaries and logical extensions of codifying those caprices are. Specifically, where does letting such a precedent stand untested end? I assume no other answer but that it leads to a tyranny of capricewhimsy and fiat government, weather that is the intention of the Executive in the instant case or not. If the American citizens clearly do see future tyranny in the present over-reaching by the Executive in the codification of his caprices and his rule by whimsy and fiat, and the citizens do nothing about these miscues, what rejoinder will they have when such encroachments are visited on their own sacred soil? That is why this is not, at core, a Church versus State issue, but rather a moral concern for all of us.

~

This is a serious moral issue that, by extension of proper logic, involves all issues of interest to every citizen. No citizen can rest easy in his comfort thinking “well perhaps this exercise in fiat governance,codification of caprice and rule by whimsy in the instant case is wrong-headed and a bit overdone, perhaps even dangerous and surely ill-advised, but it does not apply to me and mine directly in this instance, so I’ll just let it go unremarked for now.” No! Wrong move! Wrong move for anyone in our country to allow such unbridled power grabs go unremarked. If for no other reason than the future projection of enlightened self-interest, all citizens appropriately ought to be very much alarmed by the injection of fiat rule into our democratic system.

~

I confess that it was through utter inadvertence that recently I stumbled upon a clip of a Mr. George Stephanopoulos on the television speaking at Speaker Gingrich as Speaker Gingrich spoke at George. The level of discourse in American politics has deteriorated to the point that, what were once intended to be serious discussions have become, in the very best of cases, cheap and seedy game shows. In the illustrated case, the two men spent all their allotted time talking to themselves and at the other.

~

At events, Mr. Stephanopoulos’ game show that day was likely no more or less informed than any other, and, frankly, these vapid modern press conditions are not George’s fault. The news says that things are bleak out there these days and George is, I suppose, rather well paid, as far as that goes, for a reporter, to be vapid, and, vapid he is. Besides, it’s just a job and he, apparently, feels like doing it.

~

It is only as the ostensible subject, at least in part, being talked at between the two men was this regrettable disharmony between the Church and the Executive, that I recall it here. And I ask Mr. Stephanopoulos and Mr. Gingrich both this: is not the logical corollary of fiat governance, a generalized societal fiat behavior in which all the members of the society are moved by this same dictum: “what do I feel like doing today?” Further, do these gentlemen agree that the logical extension of such a dictum is chaos and, far more seriously, a still further extension is the abnegation of any and all morality?

~

Our society, devoid of morality, will not survive. It is quite that simple. It is from morality that springs personal freedom and its attendant possibilities and responsibilities. Hence, the true glory of America is amoral glory. I ask Mr. Stephanopoulos and Mr. Gingrich to comment on what sort of society we will have when all strata of men abnegate morality. It would be most unpleasant. Suppose specifically that, after their game show, Mr. Stephanopoulos and Mr. Gingrich go off together to celebrate their individual and collective brilliance with a swell meal and a bottle of Petrus. You lucky fellas! Suppose further that afterwards, Mr. Stephanopoulos, in high good spirits, is headed to his flash car where, astounded, he encounters a young ghetto urchin who decides, by fiat, to shoot Mr. Stephanopoulos in the head and take his car because the urchin “feels like it.” Such a tragedy would likely cause a stir on the television for quite some time, but, logically, the urchin has a sound license in a society that has codified caprice, rules by whimsy and abnegates all moral responsibility.

~

It is my fervent hope that all right and fair minded men can agree that the codification of caprice in the instant case of this most sad discordance between the Executive and the Church is a very bad path to tread. I hope such men can also agree that men governed by mere whimsy and fiat cannot be free and civilized. I most particularly hope that such men can come to peaceful comity of opinion that the concomitant abnegation of the rule of law and proper process that flows through logical extension from the primacy of capricefiat and whimsy, ushers in an immoral society in which men are diminished in stature to the point that they are not men any more at all but have rather repaired back to the jungle as savages.~~

La Vie sans souci~can be pricey~

John Begg 2.014....jpg

Little kids love the life sans souci~~without a care in the world~~

~~
Generally, when one grows up, one finds that the price exacted for living a life sans souci~~without a care in the world~~

~~

Is a terribly high price~~

~~

The question is laid upon the table here~~as we pretend to live a grown up life sans souci~~without a care or a consequence in the world~~

~~

Does that make you feel gai and free~~

~~

OR~~

~~

Just a little queasy?~~

Groups: This is an ‘All Hands On Deck’ Moment to Stop KXL

Following controversial Environmental Impact Statement, indigenous communities and environmental groups prepare to mobilize

– Sarah Lazare, staff writer

(Photo: AP)Now’s the time to take to the streets to stop President Obama from approving the northern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline.

That’s the call of concerned people across the United States following the Friday release of the U.S. State Department’s widely criticized environmental impact statement on the controversial pipeline.

Over 17 groups — including CREDO, Rainforest Action Network, and Forest Ethics — are urging nationwide vigils the night of Monday, February 3 to protest the pipeline.

“This is an all-hands-on-deck moment to send the message to President Obama that Keystone XL fails his climate test and he must reject it,” reads a joint statement about the day of action.

Members of seven Lakota nation tribes, as well as indigenous communities in Idaho, Oklahoma, Montana, Nebraska and Oregon, are preparing to take action to stop Keystone XL, Aboriginal Peoples Television Network reports. This includes “moccasins on the ground” — a Lakota Nation program to train and support indigenous communities in taking action against the pipeline — as well as plans to set up spiritual camps along the proposed route.

“[The pipeline] poses a threat to our sacred water and the product is coming from the tar sands and our tribes oppose the tar sands mining,” said Deborah White Plume, of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Lakota Nation in South Dakota, in an interview with APTN. “All of our tribes have taken action to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline.”

The indigenous alliance follows previous blockades by the Nez Perce tribe of megaloads traveling Idaho’s Highway 12 to the Alberta tar sands fields.

The Sierra Club is urging a mass emailing of President Obama to demand that he say “no” to the deal. “Big Oil won’t give up, so we can’t stop until we finish this,” reads theirannouncement of the drive.

Meanwhile, over 75,000 people have pledged to commit civil disobedience to stop the Keystone XL pipeline from being built.

While the much-anticipated EIS is being widely reported as a green-light for President Obama to build the pipeline, environmental groups emphasize that it contains warnings against the massive carbon footprint of a potential pipeline, including the admission that tar sands oil produces approximately 17 percent more carbon than crude.

The report comes despite the failure of the State Department’s Inspector General to complete a conflict of interest investigation into the London-based Environmental Resource Management, the contractor hired to conduct the EIS. As Zoë Carpenter points out in The Nation, green groups are charging that ERM has ties to the oil industry, including TransCanada.

“The State Department’s environmental review of the Keystone XL pipeline is a farce,” saidFriends of the Earth president Erich Pica in an interview with the National Journal, “Since the beginning of the assessment, the oil industry has had a direct pipeline into the agency.”

President Obama claimed this summer that he would only approve the company TransCanada to build the northern portion of the pipeline if it was found the project would not worsen carbon pollution.

The proposed northern leg would stretch 1,179 miles, cutting from Alberta, through Montana, and to Steele City Nebraska, where it would link with other pipelines. While there are already 2.3 million miles of pipeline pumping oil and gas across the United States, the Keystone XL pipeline is part of Canada’s plan to drastically boost prouction of high-polluting oil from Alberta’s tar sands fields.

The lesser-known southern half of the pipeline — which originates in Cushing, Oklahoma, passes through communities in Oklahoma and East Texas, and arrives at coastal refineries and shipping ports — began pumping with tar sands last month, despite the fierce resistance of frontlines communities.

Groups are urging that numbers in the streets can still sway President Obama’s final decision on the northern portion of the pipeline. “[T]he only time you can count on the President is when you have him completely surrounded,” writes 350.org. “And so it’s up to us to mobilize again, and put the pressure on from all sides.”

“The tar sands is already affecting the people (for Fort Chipewyan in Alberta), climate change is already obvious,” said Gary Dorr, from the Nez Perce Tribe in Idaho, in an interview withAPTN. “To facilitate that is not something the Native people of the U.S. are going to do. We are not going to sit idly by and let it happen.”
