Apropos of The Great Sino-American Agreement on Global Warming, that, I think, is being discussed here today:

Karen Torrent hits the nail on the head when she writes:

“Too bad pledges are unenforceable.”

Since the Americans don’t care for the lessons of Lady History, it would be useful for those assembled to crack open a book and read about Mr Wilson’s League of Nations, an agreement, a pledge, that was the cherry on the top of Mr Wilson’s coffeecake he called his “War To End All War.”

Mr. Wilson and many others, in then high positions, signed all sorts of pretty things after the Great War..but the astute judge of history must look behind the daily headlines to ask such probing things as:

“Yes, but what does this agreement actually mean in practice?”

And…

“Yes, but what happened to Mr Wilson’s League when it met with a hostile American Senate?”

And cherry of all cherries on top of Mr. Wilson’s coffeecake, we must ask:

Just what became of his pledge that the unparalleled barbarity of The Great War was worth the anguish, as it would “End all War?”

In point of fact, since 1917, America has been at war forever.

Lady History tells us, if we would only pay Her proper and dutiful attention, that Mr Wilson’s War to end War became instead:

The War that never ends at all.

And, more so, do readers here know how impotent the Chinese President is, as his nation is run by a murky, inherited aristocracy, little known in China Herself, and largely nameless, to evenly comparatively well-educated alien Sinologists, deriving its power from the offspring of Chairman Mao and Company, who keep a puppet in a Western blue suit to make speeches and sign high sounding accords that the Chinese aristocracy will ignore at their whim.

So, today, a piece of paper has been signed by two impotent leaders who hold, very fleeting, ceremonial, power and very little else.

The cannon fire of Mrs Tuchman’s masterwork “The Guns of August,” repeats and repeats in our ear.
