Try to sell this in the South.
~~
I am forever being asked about politics, which is terribly rude, but as I can’t seem to ever fully duck this subject.
~~
I said, just this once, about Senator Kerry, when I was asked my thought about him:
~~
“Kerry wears Hermes ties, at least sometimes he does.”
~~
Most other times, Kerry wear ties from The Vineyard Vines, known colloquially, here as:
~~
“Poor man’s Hermes.”
~~
I have to say that Kerry’s Hermes are a bit too wide and the silks too heavy and lacking for sufficient malleability to be just right, and that he can’t seem to master the dimple element at all, but considering the general conditions of our society, to say that sort of thing in print would simply just be too catty and we can’t have that on a Catholic family program such as this, now can we?
~~
Suffice to say:

“Kerry is entirely too well dressed for the American people.”
~~
The singular lesson of American politics is that, on an ephemeral sort of level, the Americans must be certain, in their own minds, that they are better, on every level conceivable, than the men they elect President.
~~
On every level conceivable.
~~
Any man who stands for high office must, on that visceral level, communicate to the Americans that he fully understands that he is:
~~
Far, far inferior to them,
~~
On every conceivable level.
~~
Otherwise, the Americans will reject him and he will fail to win the prize he seeks….such as it is.
~~
This explains in part, although not entirely of course, why American politicians are uniformly, so wretchedly, dressed.
~~
News girls make up all sorts of reasons why Kerry lost election, but it really was to do with his clothes and their attendant impression left, that Kerry didn’t understand the only lesson necessary to be President which is:
~~
To make the Americans think that they are far, far superior to you:
~~
On every conceivable level.
~~
On every level:
~~
Conceivable.
~~
The new, very young, incumbent President has likely missed out on that the race for the White House 2016 is now fully in flight and that he is now:
~~
Nothing but an afterthought that old people sometimes talk about.
~~
Taking a quick look at the lineup for 2016, I am sanguine that all the field has been properly schooled in the lesson that to win the race, the Americans must know that you mean it when you say to them that:
~~
“I am far, far inferior to you:
~~
On every conceivable level.”
~~
“On every level that is conceivable.”
~~
I am certain that the new, young incumbent would very much agree with me that all the candidates must try their best to communicate to the voters this inferiority business and that:
~~
It is not enough to merely say the words:
~~
“I am far, far inferior to you, so please, please, vote for me”:
~~
You have to really mean it:
~~
Deep down, way deep, inside you.
~~
I have to say that, on a quick look at the 2016 field, all the horses have been well schooled as to their native inferiority:
~~
Most particularly with respect to having to do with making sure that their clothes do not offend or suggest to the people that one is putting on airs as that just won’t cut it in the race to become the next:
~~
Most inferior man in America.
~~
Based on our quick review, no worries about clothes in 2016, or about candidates entirely too well dressed for the Americans.
~~
All the prospective candidates seem to already, reflexively, know that:
~~
“I must remember, somehow intuitively, to dress so horridly so that, even in the South:
~~
I will make the voters feel at ease and:
~~
At Home.”
~~
Realizing that…
~~
After all, in the end, most everything, of consequence, has to do with a man’s clothes, now doesn’t it?

It does.
~~
Kerry lost the race of course.

The only American President I’ve ever seen who wore an, evenly remotely, decent tie was Jack Kennedy at his Inauguration and we all know how that turned out, now don’t we?
~~
Jack didn’t sell in the South either and I remember that when he went there on campaign with his wife, they were so savaged about their clothes, hair, accents and so on that they were effectively banned from going there on campaign ever again, leaving that most important of American areas to the alcoholic hands of LBJ…which worked out well, that is, except, of course, until it no longer worked out well and there came a bloody road in:
~~
Dallas

When I was very, very young, people were planning to make me President.
~~
I asked Nana Maternal:
~~
“If I simply must be President, do I have to dress as badly as they do?”
~~
Nana said “Yes, dear, you do.”
~~
I said “Nana, you are una bella Milana, how could you ask me to do such a thing?”

Nana said: “because you are a little gift to the nation, darling.”

I said “I’d really love to help, I’d love to be a little gift to the Americans, but I’m afraid Nana dear, that I just cannot help you out..the cost is far, far too high, if I must dress like the American politicians.”

He says out loud what many people think deep down, and what the politicians refrain from saying because they are either too demagogic or too chicken. Le Pen, with all his faults and qualities, is probably the only one who thinks about the interests of France before his own."~~ French actor~~Alain Delon
