I wouldn’t hire a Haa~vad lawyer to fix a parking ticket.

American businessmen must stop complaining that society does not properly prepare workers for them to employ.

~~

It is the job of individual businessmen to prepare their workers to work for them.

~~

It it the fashion today to bemoan the school system, and, indeed, society at large, for having failed to produce qualified new workers for business.

~~

It is not the job of the society or the schools to prepare and train workers for business.

~~

The job of the family and extended society is to prepare good citizens to function in American life and commerce.

~~

It is the job of the schools and colleges to train students how to think properly.

~~

The businessman must select the best workers from those available and teach them his business.

~~

No one is born knowing anything about business of any kind.

~~

In much the same manner, no one is born educated or literate.

~~

There certainly are problems in the American families and American society at large.

~~

Those failings are, however, not directly the concern of business.

~~

In selecting proper candidates for employment, businessmen appropriately ought to look for particular character traits and social skills.

~~

As business is, of definition, a social enterprise, the businessman is in a position to demand and define the proper sort of social skills and manners of deportment he requires in those he employs.

~~

When you hire a new worker, be concerned about social skills and deportment.  Anybody who has the rudimentary social skills and deportment can learn any business.

~~

One hears today from some quarters of American enterprise:

~~

“Oh, my, kids today you know, they have dreadful hair and clothes and no language skills and no training in my field.  As a consequence, I must go shopping in India and China to get my workers, poor little me!!”

~~

Balderdash!!
It is the job of the businessman to dictate to his employees how to speak to clients, how to dress, what to do in working hours and so on.

~~

It that sense, business today is no different from what it has ever been.

~~

Go to jobs fairs at junior high schools, at high schools, at the colleges.

~~

Sponsor these fairs yourself, don’t wait for some other guy to do it, act unilaterally.
~~
Tell the students what your business does and what it expects of the new employee.  If you do that, when you hire a new worker, you can teach him the particulars of any job.

~~

At some city firms today, one hears:

~~

“Oh! I only hire men who’ve been up to Haa~vad or up to Yah~ale!!”

~~

If that is your policy, well, then, bully for you!

~~

For most businesses however, demanding that all new employees demonstrate that they have gone up to Haa~vad or up to Yah~le, is a bit much, will cost a fortune and will little benefit either Party.

~~

A friend of our family once said to me:

~~

“I wouldn’t hire a Haa~vad lawyer to fix a parking ticket.”

~~

Business is just not that complex.

~~

It never has been.

~~

It never will be.

~~

It may well be that many of the young are being shortchanged today in the society at large and in the schools, but that makes the job of the businessman easier than it was before, not more difficult, as today is alleged.

~~

The failures of the society and the schools are lamentable to be sure and must be addressed as major social reformations.

~~

That said, it is passing the buck for businessmen to say to the society and the schools:

~~

“You have failed me!!  You have not delivered to me good quality product!!”

~~

The job of the businessman is to be very direct in his demands of his employees:

~~

Demand that your employees be courteous and polite with clients and with one another. If you have a dress code, enforce it.

~~

Some will say: “It’s very hard to get anybody to wear nicely made three-piece suits anymore these days!!”

~~

Well…

~~

You, after all, are the boss.  If you require that manner of dress in your business, let the workers know it.  Lead your workers by your example.  Speak the way you wish them to speak.  Dress the way you wish them to dress.  Comport yourself in office hours in just the same manner as you would have your workers comport themselves.

~~

All business is fundamentally a social enterprise.

~~

As the boss, you decide how your enterprise will function and be managed.

~~

Be demanding: Of yourself and your workers.

~~

Be inspired by inspirational businessmen from American History:
Henry Ford

Henry Kaiser

Milton Hershey

~~

Study what made these men great.

~~

These men took good care of their workers, they paid them a salary of high premium to dollar.  They educated their workers, many of whom came from foreign lands.  In that manner, the businessman filled in what gaps existed in the prior societal preparation and family backgrounds of the workers.

~~

YOU can fill in those gaps today.

~~

Use these great businessmen of our past as good examples to yourself and to your workers.

~~

There is a notion in business today that there is no loyalty anymore on the part of the workers.

~~

If so, that is the fault of the businessman, not the worker.

~~

It is the job of the businessman to make working for him so comparatively glorious, that no worker will ever think to leave him for anybody else.

~~

There will be loyalty and dedication to your business if you demand of your workers that they be exemplary in every way in exchange for your providing a job that is better paid and otherwise compensated and in an environment that is demanding and firm, but fair and exhilarating, than that worker will find…anywhere else.

~~

I can assure American businessmen that there are many millions of good workers in America, crying out for just a boot up, just a little opportunity to excel in a decent job, for a decent pay and benefit package.

~~

Employment in business is a deal:

~~

You give the worker this, the worker gives you that.  A quid pro quo.

~~

A deal in which both the businessman and the worker get a fair shake out of the bargain.

~~

When I was young, a rich businessman was to dinner and at table this man said to me:
~~

“Johnnie, he said, “When I assess a man’s competence to work for me, the first thing I do is look into his eyes and listen to his voice describing why he wants to work for me.  In that brief minute, I make my decision.  All the paperwork, certificates and recommendations of his background are of secondary, transitory, incidental importance.  I can tell more about, if or no, an applicant will be a good worker for me by looking into his eyes and hearing his voice, than by any other means.”

~~

Those words struck me then and do yet today as the guiding lights, the touchstones for finding good workers.

~~

Those words were true words then and they are true words today.  Let those words guide your business.  Let them guide your hiring.  Go out and search for the best workers.  Do not sit back and complain that there are no good workers today.  There are millions of good and willing workers today.  Go out and find them.  You are the businessman.  You are the one who is supposed to make things happen.

~~

So…make things happen.

~~

Start to make things happen by going out, in a deliberate and calculating manner, in search among the Americans for the kind of worker you want.

~~

That worker is out here, millions of his fellow workers are likewise out there, in America, willing, wanting and wishing to meet you and to work for you at a good, gracious and steady job.

~~

Go out and find your workers and teach them your enterprise.

~~

The vast majority of all that ails America today can be corrected by the simple act of enlightened businessmen going out and finding good workers to train and nourish in a worthwhile enterprise.

~~

Go out into America and search for the best workers.

~~

Explain your business to everyone.

~~

Never complain to anyone.

~~

Explain, never complain.

~~

Explain that you understand the deal:

~~

That good pay and benefits and working conditions will bring good workers to your door.

~~

Let them know that you are looking for them and they will let you know that they are ready to work….For YOU.

~~

Always keep uppermost in your mind that business today is as it has ever been:

~~

A DEAL:

~~

Between boss and worker, adequately benefiting: both parties.

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic parochial school, called, by anyone of any background, simply: “Chan~al,” a place where, of an autumn day in 1957, school,  for me,  began and ended in the first convening of the first grade in which a tiny nun, one Sister Dom Bosco, appeared before me, just behind the window appearing at far left of this photograph, and piped out this: “I may be small, but so then, is the Atom Bomb.”
    ~~
My determination to escape school commenced immediately on hearing about this Atom Bomb business and took 16 dicey and arduous years to finally accomplish.~~

"Jean-Marie Le Pen is a friend. He is dangerous for the political set because he's the only one who's sincere. He says out loud what many people think deep down, and what the politicians refrain from saying because they are either too demagogic or too chicken. Le Pen, with all his faults and qualities, is probably the only one who thinks about the interests of France before his own."~~
