It is the triumphant ubiquity of advertising that best gives the lie to The American notion of self-governing choice.

The Americans can’t trust themselves to choose what to eat for breakfast, let alone whom should govern them.

The Americans neither desire to govern themselves nor evince the faintest notion of how to govern themselves.

Were the Americans of any state of mind to give, even passing thought to the idea of self-governance, as they watch the horses now parade onto the track for 2016, the Americans ought to think about this:

“Did I, or anyone else I know, select these horses to be in this race?

“What, besides being members of the resume wavers class, qualifies any of these candidates for the White House?”

The Honest answer:

“Of course, I’ve never given any of this a first, let alone a second thought, as I rely on somebody else to tell me what to eat for breakfast.”

All this apropos of the American notion of democratic republicanism:  That we govern ourselves, through our representatives.

Demonstrating, QED, that the ubiquity of American advertising is that which governs the Americans, in all elements of their lives, most particularly so, in their exercise of what they like to call self-governance.
