537 nooses, 537 solutions!!!!

Tonight, I am most fortunate to just now watch a magnificent movie adaptation of Mr Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities from 1935 and reflecting on the riotous state of the present American electorate, I think back also to the early 1970’s and an equally riotous rock concert I attended on the National Mall at which, among other stars performing, was a, very young Alvin Lee, who recently died and back then had a band called “10 years after,” that had some bounce to it.

I remember that there was a young fella who kept grabbing Alvin Lee’s microphone and, holding high a noose, repeatedly cried out:

“537 nooses, 537 solutions!!!”

Many around me asked: “What does this boy mean? I laughed and said:

“Well, he means that there are 435 Congressmen, 100 Senators, a Vice President and a President, who collectively add up to 537, who he recommends hanging as a solution to all those things that ail America.”

My explanation was greeted with rousing applause and passed along through the crowd, leaving me tonight to wonder:

“If this were so popular a notion in 1970, can you imagine how popular it would be today?”

I remember thinking that the lad with the noose was a bit of a simpleton back then, but tonight watching Mr Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities and reflecting on the current state of American disenchantment with Washington and Her politicians, that the boy had a point that is very likely a majority point of view today respecting just what to do today with Washington politicians.

Consider if, in the morning, 537 politicians hung from 537 nooses here at Washington, how popular a thing that would be.

Consider all the more so the effect those hangings would have on the, very large group of slippery hustlers who currently have their eyes on the prize of 2016.

I puts it to you and I leaves it with you:

Would there be any candidates left for office after the hanging of the 537?

NO SIR!!

NONE, MAM!!

And would our hangman say, as does the hero of A Tale of Two Cities now whisper to me, when our hangman’s wife asks him tomorrow at breakfast here, what he did with this evening last:

“”Twas a far, far better thing I did than I have ever done.”

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic parochial school, called, by anyone of any background, simply: “Chan~al,” a place where, of an autumn day in 1957, school, for me, began and ended in the first convening of the first grade in which a tiny nun, one Sister Dom Bosco, appeared before me, just behind the window appearing at far left of this photograph, and piped out this: “I may be small, but so then, is the Atom Bomb.”
