Motto of Saint Thomas More, The Silent Saint
Saint Thomas More, a man for all seasons, left us a lesson to which we ought always, daily, attend.
Thomas More gave his hearth, title, prestige, family, money and ultimately his head under the ax for his obdurate refusal to give the wrong answer to the only question in life that matters:
“How does a man remain good in a world of, equally obdurate, thoroughgoing, evil?”
I remember seeing both the play at New York and the film adaptation of A Man for All Seasons when it was the film was released in 1966, but I must say that when I watched the film once again the other night, I was far more impressed By Paul Scofield, the protagonist, Saint Thomas More, than I had been in 1966.
Age perhaps, we hope, leads to clearer understanding.
Thomas was a good man, indeed, a saintly man, in an evil, grasping world under the rule of King Henry VIII.
Ultimately, Saint Thomas More’s earthly sin was that he displeased his KING
The King, as we know, was married to his brother’s widow, Catalina of Aragon, who could not produce Henry a healthy baby son and heir.
Henry sought first dispensation to marry his dead brother’s widow, although why such a dispensation would have been necessary given that Catalina of Aragon was a widow has always been beyond me.
Henry likewise sought from The Holy Pope additional dispensation to divorce Catalina of Aragon as she refused to produce for him a healthy male heir.
Ultimately rejected that second dispensation by The Holy Pope, Henry declared Himself the new head of the new Church of England, which initially incorporated all of the laws, rules and regulations of the Holy Roman Church save this:
Henry would now be the de jure English Pope.
These actions, most particularly so the third, as can be easily understood, caused a bit of a stir in a then staunchly Catholic England.
Henry demanded that all the nobility, priests and others of rank, swear an oath of fealty to his three edicts.
Henry most particularly sought this oath from Thomas More, a longtime friend, adviser, lawyer and what today would be called the “Brain Trust” of his Kingdom.
Thomas, a staunch and faithful Catholic, made no response.
He did not refuse Henry, he merely remained silent.
Comes now the rub my dears:
Henry was not to be trifled with and became more insistent and boisterous as time went on that Thomas swear, before him~~to give his verbal ascent to his King’s demands.
Thomas remained SILENT.
In response to fervent pleadings of his wife and daughter, Thomas, a brilliant lawyer said this:
“My silence is my protection.”
In fury, Henry had stripped Thomas of all the trappings of grand power to induce his withheld oath.
Thomas remained silent.
In frenzy, Henry sent Thomas to the Tower of London and, when Thomas still would not relent and yet remained silent, Thomas was charged with High treason.
Comes now, dears, the trial of Thomas and his, predictable end on the scaffold.
At his High Treason trial, Thomas, a brilliant lawyer, employed this logic:
If he never says anything against the King, people will assume he’s a fully supportive subject.
During his trial, More argues that “Silence is not denial.”
When Cromwell, the simian prosecutor for the Crown, insists that his silence has “betokened” or indicated some opinion.
More responds that his silence should have indicated consent, if anything.
He uses the Latin legal phrase “qui tacet consentire,” or “silence gives consent.”
Legal jousting aside, Thomas of course knew he was a condemned man.
Today, we call St Thomas More: The Man for all Seasons:

Thomas truly was such a man:
A man for all seasons. a man who is ready to cope with any contingency and whose behaviour is always appropriate to every occasion.
Robert Whittington applied this description to the English statesman and scholar Sir Thomas More ( 1478–1535 ), and it was used by Robert Bolt as the title of his 1960 play about More from whence the movie of the same name released in 1966 derives and which I watched, avidly, late the other night.
The end finally came for Thomas, as in due course, it comes for all of us.
The Distinction is this:
Saint Thomas lived and died The Silent Saint.
Loyal both to his God and his King.
Qui tacet consentire.
