Three American politicians have impressed us here at Washington in our lifetime.

All three were very different men, one to the other and yet, all three of them impressed us for the same reason:

Wallace in 1972; who had a keen, intuitive, sense of the people, innate charisma and an implacable hatred of Washington,

Perot in 1992, who lacked Wallace’s savage sense of the American people and charisma but who had money and shared with Wallace an implacable hatred of Washington

And….

Trump in 2016, who has all of the reflexive, boxer’s intuitiveness of Wallace, the money of Perot and shares both of their implacable hatreds of Washington and their innate feel for the American people and what the Americans want done with this city.

In the eyes of all three men we see what so petrified Nixon in 1972, who sensed a wave rising that Washington did not and yet today cannot, understand.

Nixon sensed a wave rising that carried, in its then yet embryonic state:

The glint of the American people that was in Wallace’s eyes.

The Glint.

It is that same glint of the people that so petrifies, so terrifies, Washington.

Today, Washington, hurries, fretfully and once again, attempts to draw the blinds, to shutter the shades, against Trump, much as Washington earlier did to stave off Perot and Wallace.

Nothing more terrifies the men of Washington than does a glimpse of the glint of the people in the eyes of a potent political force.

One day, the blinds will not pull down.

One day, the shades will not shutter.

That day may well be 8 November, 2016.

Maybe on that day, with a little luck and God’s Grace, forty years on from Wallace, twenty years on from Perot, Trump will make the glint in the eye of the American people finally triumphant over the city the American nation now so deplores.

How short the list one could compile of those of whom it can be said that fame and money did not deprave?

At Washington, capital city of the terminally self-absorbed, mortal man holds to fleeting, feeble and fallible opinion, God immutable fact.
