His illness, a rare form of adult polio, was cruel in so many ways, reducing a man of iron to a helpless invalid:

A cruelty compounded many times over as his illness, principally evinced by severe and ever more debilitating weakness, is a disease that now bears that iron man’s name:

In a world today, so long devoid of genuine heroes, we remember Lou Gehrig as a true hero:

A man who never gave up, never felt sorry for himself and fought life’s battles to the final, bitter, end without complaint.

All men who walk on this earth must die.

A rare, private and very different sort of man, a poor boy who grew into a powerful man who read books and attended Columbia University and was likewise as agile as a gazelle and could hit with a power that was frightening to watch.

New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia called Gehrig “the greatest prototype of good sportsmanship and citizenship” and Postmaster General James Farley concluded his speech by predicting,
