Our Little Match Girl is emblematic of the great mass of disenfranchised Americans this New Year’s Day, 2014.~~

The Little Match-Seller~~
~~

It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, roamed through the streets. It is true she had on a pair of slippers when she left home, but they were not of much use. They were very large, so large, indeed, that they had belonged to her mother, and the poor little creature had lost them in running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling along at a terrible rate. One of the slippers she could not find, and a boy seized upon the other and ran away with it, saying that he could use it as a cradle, when he had children of his own. So the little girl went on with her little naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold.

In an old apron she carried a number of matches, and had a bundle of them in her hands. No one had bought anything of her the whole day, nor had any one given here even a penny. Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along; poor little child, she looked the picture of misery. The snowflakes fell on her long, fair hair, which hung in curls on her shoulders, but she regarded them not.

Lights were shining from every window, and there was a savory smell of roast goose, for it was New-year’s eve – yes, she remembered that. In a corner, between two houses, one of which projected beyond the other, she sank down and huddled herself together. She had drawn her little feet under her, but she could not keep off the cold; and she dared not go home, for she had sold no matches, and could not take home even a penny of money. Her father would certainly beat her; besides, it was almost as cold at home as here, for they had only the roof to cover them, through which the wind howled, although the largest holes had been stopped up with straw and rags.

Her little hands were almost frozen with the cold. Ah! perhaps a burning match might be some good, if she could draw it from the bundle and strike it against the wall, just to warm her fingers.

<  2  >

     She drew one out – “scratch!” how it sputtered as it burnt! It gave a warm, bright light, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it. It was really a wonderful light. It seemed to the little girl that she was sitting by a large iron stove, with polished brass feet and a brass ornament. How the fire burned! and seemed so beautifully warm that the child stretched out her feet as if to warm them, when, lo! the flame of the match went out, the stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the half-burnt match in her hand.

She rubbed another match on the wall. It burst into a flame, and where its light fell upon the wall it became as transparent as a veil, and she could see into the room. The table was covered with a snowy white table-cloth, on which stood a splendid dinner service, and a steaming roast goose, stuffed with apples and dried plums. And what was still more wonderful, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled across the floor, with a knife and fork in its breast, to the little girl. Then the match went out, and there remained nothing but the thick, damp, cold wall before her.

She lighted another match, and then she found herself sitting under a beautiful Christmas-tree. It was larger and more beautifully decorated than the one which she had seen through the glass door at the rich merchant’s. Thousands of tapers were burning upon the green branches, and colored pictures, like those she had seen in the show-windows, looked down upon it all. The little one stretched out her hand towards them, and the match went out.

The Christmas lights rose higher and higher, till they looked to her like the stars in the sky. Then she saw a star fall, leaving behind it a bright streak of fire. “Some one is dying,” thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only one who had ever loved her, and who was now dead, had told her that when a star falls, a soul was going up to God.

<  3  >

     She again rubbed a match on the wall, and the light shone round her; in the brightness stood her old grandmother, clear and shining, yet mild and loving in her appearance.

“Grandmother,” cried the little one, “O take me with you; I know you will go away when the match burns out; you will vanish like the warm stove, the roast goose, and the large, glorious Christmas-tree.”

And she made haste to light the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother there. And the matches glowed with a light that was brighter than the noon-day, and her grandmother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and they both flew upwards in brightness and joy far above the earth, where there was neither cold nor hunger nor pain, for they were with God.

In the dawn of morning there lay the poor little one, with pale cheeks and smiling mouth, leaning against the wall; she had been frozen to death on the last evening of the year; and the New-year’s sun rose and shone upon a little corpse! The child still sat, in the stiffness of death, holding the matches in her hand, one bundle of which was burnt.

“She tried to warm herself,” said some.

No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, nor into what glory she had entered with her grandmother, on New-Year’s Day.~~

The song begins by posing a rhetorical question as to whether it is right that old times be forgotten, and is generally interpreted as a call to remember long-standing friendships.[9]Thomson’s Select Songs of Scotland was published in 1799 in which the second verse about greeting and toasting was moved to its present position at the end.[9]

Most common use of the song involves only the first verse and the chorus. The last lines of both of these are often sung with the extra words “For the sake of” or “And days of”, rather than Burns’ simpler lines. This allows one note for each word, rather than the slight melisma required to fit Burns’ original words to the melody.

John Begg – Shinbashi

Here is the second post on another great little bar in the Shimbashi neighborhood of Tokyo.  We stumbled into this place when I had planned to go to Susie’s but found it closed.  John Begg sits right next door, and it’s sign is quite a bit more prominent and inviting than Susie’s.  I should start off by saying that regrettably I did not take any pictures at John Begg, so I shamelessly clipped these off the internet.  To the Japanese reviewer who took them, I hope you do not mind!

John Begg was a Scotsman from Aberdeen.  He started the New Loughnagar Distillery in the 1845, and as a result of receiving the “Royal Warrant of Appointment” as a supplier to the Queen (Victoria) he changed the name to Royal Loughnagar Distillery.  John Begg passed away in 1880, and the company was later acquired by John Dewar Ltd and Sons in 1916.  Today the company is still going strong as part of the massive holdings of the beverage giant Diageo.

While the origins of John Begg Whiskey are well documented, how this John Begg bar came about in Shinbashi remains a bit of a mystery.  What I can tell you is the place is run by a Mama-san who has been tending to this same establishment for quite a long time (40-50 years?).  It is my understanding that this bar originated in 1949.  My guess is that not much inside has changed since.  It is a much bigger place than Susie’s next door, but before you think it must be large, please don’t forget you had to turn sideways when you walked into Susie’s.  John Begg is small.  A very nice curved wood bar fronts around 6 or so stools along the right side of the room.

To the left is a seating area with three small sections that can seat around 9 at the most.  A few comfortable looking very small couch type pieces along with a few stools.  That’s it.  What makes this place so cool is the decor, both behind and on the bar as well as on the walls.  It is tasteful, old, and classy.  There is a very large painting of the Mama-san when she was young.  A very beautiful lady, both then as well as now.

John Begg has many different liquors but seems to specialize in Whiskey.  Begg’s brand is of course the “house pour”, and I would recommend the 12 year old Royal Loughnagar Single Malt, which was quite tasty.  Two capable and experienced barmen tend very professionally to the drinks.  The service is first rate.  One speaks a little bit of English, which was very helpful (I did not have my Japanese co-workers along for this adventure).  The place had some classic looking coasters seen here.

Go to John Begg if you want to relax and go back in time.  Enjoy the serenity of the place, the nice service, and the fine cocktails.  The craziness of Shinbashi is outside all around you, but within these walls you can escape.  You can enjoy.  There is a Ginza feel here, which is only a few blocks away.

I hope to return to this place with some of my Japanese friends so I can find out more about it from the Mama-san.  Shinbashi, Tokyo and the world needs more places like John Begg.  Search them out before they are gone forever, like Susie’s next door.

Winston Churchill once said, “I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.” Throughout his life, from his time a journalist to his years as the British Prime Minister, a bottle of booze was never far from Churchill’s side. The wartime leader was notorious for his love of a drink. He is said to have drunk hock, a type of wine, with breakfast. Churchill would then amp up with alcohol intake during the day. At meal times the booze flowed freely. He was known to drink both champagne and brandy at lunch and dinner. Churchill would often joke about his alcohol intake. He once told the King of Saudi Arabia that his absolute rule of life required drinking before, during, and after meals.~~

Obamacare Train Wreck Could Derail US Recovery

Monday, 30 Dec 2013 09:22 AM

The U.S. economy is gaining strength, but the Obamacare train wreck, festering problems in far away China and uncertain leadership at the Federal Reserve could derail the recovery.No small courage will be required for good sense to finally restore American prosperity.

Here are three things that could derails a full economic recovery.

Obamacare

President Barack Obama is imposing the Affordable Care Act on a justifiably unwilling citizenry.

The botched rollout is laying bare the absolute incompetence of the Washington bureaucracy, but that is not the worst of it.Many young Americans have decided that Obamacare health insurance is too expensive for their needs, and insurers face financial ruin paying claims to a less healthy population of policyholders than anticipated. They will charge higher rates in 2015 and may require a bailout.

Don’t count on Republicans winning the Senate and putting Obamacare out of its misery — the electorate may prove too cynical.

In the 2013 Virginia gubernatorial election, voters, angry about Obamacare, blamed Democrat Terry McAuliffe. Yet, he managed a narrow victory by promising free health care to 300,000 citizens by expanding Medicaid.

Lest jobs creation and growth be handicapped by an excessively expensive and bureaucratic health care system, “makers” may simply have to tell the “takers” enough is enough, march on Washington and demand radical changes.

Don’t productive Americans deserve a civil rights movement too?

China’s Banking Mess

China’s economic miracle may prove a bigger fraud than the American pre-crisis prosperity built on shabby lending and consumer spending on steroids.

Many Chinese businesses that stock Wall-Mart with unimaginably inexpensive gadgets were built on loans they can’t repay. Similarly, banks have financed provincial governments to build cities occupied by displaced farmers that have no jobs.

Beijing has raised interest rates to gradually deflate bubbles in stock and land prices, but now borrowers cannot pay those rates and banks and private lenders could face ruin.

A financial crisis won’t end the rise of China, but it would expose a great fraud: the superiority of state-directed capitalism over western democracy and free markets.

No one would be more disappointed than the collectivists at National Public Broadcasting and other liberal media, who celebrate each Chinese achievement with the enthusiasm the French cheered General Washington’s victories over the British.

The simultaneous debunking of the ACA and Chinese miracle offer conservatives the opportunity to refocus the debate in America from the shortcomings of free markets and private enterprise to helping those thrive and contribute to middle class prosperity as they did in the 1980s and 1990s.

Federal Reserve

During the financial crisis, the Federal Reserve balked at bailing out GM. The Fed could have bought the automaker’s bad debt, just as it took bad mortgages off banks’ books. Ben Bernanke pronounced assisting GM would be “industrial policy” and limited the Fed to extraordinary measures to stabilize banks and credit markets.

Obama used TARP—the Treasury fund established by President Bush and Congress—to rescue both GM and American International Group, an insurance company.

The next financial crisis well could be defined by the coincident plights of health insurance companies under Obamacare, and the sagging fortunes of American companies who invested in China’s “recession proof” economy.

New Fed Chairman Janet Yellen is well known for her very liberal political views, which not so incidentally color her economics. In a crisis, she could see the limits of Fed policy discretion very differently than Bernanke.

Using the Fed’s money printing machinery to bail out health insurance companies and Obamacare could put America on a path to inflation and corruption similar to Latin American nations during the 1970s and 80s.

It would be up to Republicans in the Senate to shut down the chamber if necessary to force hearings and compel Chairman Yellen to defend the dollar, not debase the currency.

Standing up to the failures of liberalism, when it counts, has never been politically easy—and Republicans like Speaker Boehner and Congressman Ryan are rightly the targets of Tea Party criticism.

All along, at crisis moments like these, they have capitulated. Now standing strong for America is even more difficult, but if not now then when?

The Girls of political Washington want to know~~what is all this glum talk about?~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We thank our Mr Morici today for his interesting and compelling note to us~~while we do not think Mr Morici goes far enough or gets close enough to the core message that the opposition to the craven gaucheries of Washington today ought adopt, Mr Morici makes a good start.
We think however that those of us in opposition ought advocate for a President who simply does these things~~upon this premise~~
~~
That a man who has never held any office will win office in a massive landslide if~~he simply sticks to this platform alone~~
~~
~~The rich man ought not be taxed at all~~he ought be compelled to employ and train the poor man~~personally and directly~~
~~
And that~~
~~
~~The principal need in America today is~~financial and industrial De-Globalization~~to facilitate the promotion of the possibility for the average man to get and keep a good job with good benefits paid by the employer~~as was done not very long ago.~~
~
 And that~~beyond that~~The new President will~~Leave the people the hell alone~~
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Protect the citizens, facilitate commerce and leave the people the hell alone~an exploratory committee for President 2016 now begins~testing this proposition….~

albert-einstein-on-imagination
I think old Albert was onto something there~~I do~~
~~
The Americans have yet to wake up to the fact that well over a decade ago~~they left the Age of Information~~and entered instead~~the Age of Imagination~~the trouble is~~so few have any imagination to put to use in this new age~~
~~
The Americans have all the computer boxes and gadgets of the earlier information age~~but have nothing of any interest to say on the boxes~~oh, dear me~~I wonder if one of these computer box fellas can come up with a box that injects imaginative capacity into the veins of the Americans~~
~~
Of which~~consider~~if you’ve the stomach for it~~
~~
Politics in America~~
~~
Presently~~
~~

Politics is the art~~can that possibly be the right word~~of the insistent avoidance of using man’s creative imagination~~to the point that the least imaginative man is odds-on bound to win election~~

~~

Why don’t the Americans do something else instead at their next election in 2016~~

~~

For Instance~~

~~

Instead~~how about running~~and electing~~a fella who has but one policy~~
~~
To bring good jobs home to all the Americans~~
~~
How about a non-politician who says to you this~~
~~The rich man ought not be taxed at all~~he ought be compelled to employ and train the poor man~~personally and directly~~
~~
And that~~
~~
~~The principal need in America today is~~financial and industrial De-Globalization~~to facilitate the promotion of the possibility for the average man to get and keep a good job with good benefits paid by the employer~~as was done not very long ago.~~
~~

After all dears, The President of the Americans is not supposed to involve himself in the day-to-day affairs of the people except in these very constrained and specific ways~~
~~

Bringing good jobs for all back to America~~

~~

The role of the President is very simple.

~~

The President’s job is not to interfere, or even comment, upon much of the comings and goings of American life. Most of American life is none of his business.  He is not a preacher or a reformer.

~~

His job is~~principally~~limited to these underlining duties~~

~~

To~~

~~

Protect the citizens, facilitate commerce and leave the people the hell alone~~

~~

Of those three policies~~imagine a President who will~~

~~

~~As the great comedian Jimmy Durante used to say~~ “Leave the people the hell alone.”~~

~~

Let’s use our collective imagination and elect a President who limits his involvement in American live to simply bringing good jobs back to America~~and protecting the people.

~~

“Leave the people the hell alone”~an exploratory committee 2016 now begins~~testing this proposition~~

~~

That a man who has never held any office will win office in a massive landslide if~~he simply sticks to this platform alone~~

~~

~~The rich man ought not be taxed at all~~he ought be compelled to employ and train the poor man~~personally and directly~~
~~
And that~~
~~
~~The principal need in America today is~~financial and industrial De-Globalization~~to facilitate the promotion of the possibility for the average man to get and keep a good job with good benefits paid by the employer~~as was done not very long ago.~~
~~
 And that~~beyond that~~The new President will~~Leave the people the hell alone~~

Hedrick Smith has asked us “Who stole the American Dream?”~I ask a different question~”Who SOLD America?” I say~Globalized industry and international finance are the tools of the traitors at America’s throat~we must rid ourselves of these traitors~ruthlessly~

Image

Marcus Tullius Cicero, English byname Tully    (born 106 bce, Arpinum, Latium [now Arpino,Italy]—died Dec. 7, 43 bce, Formiae, Latium [now Formia]), Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, and writer who vainly tried to uphold republican principles in the final civil wars that destroyed the Roman Republic. His writings include books of rhetoric, orations, philosophical and political treatises, and letters. He is remembered in modern times as the greatest Roman orator and innovator of what became known as Ciceronian rhetoric.

~~

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious.

But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through…all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.

For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.

He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.

A murderer is less to fear.

The traitor is the plague.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tom~~Agreed all points~you have to have the right horse for the right course–in a number of the races I will be tending in 2014~~we are sending moderate men–which is good because they are in moderate districts–as far as I am concerned we can go as far right as the world turns–but reality is that what we really need is numbers–numbers stir the drink–we already control the lower chamber–if we have the upper chamber in 2015–and we will–I don’t care much about the beliefs of the men in my red jackets–I just want to see floods of red jackets–I just want control of the two chambers–initially so to block any further shenanigans from white house and then to set the table for a red President in 2017~~and of course Rush et al are in business to excite the red meat eaters and he gets paid for that–it’s a business–I don’t begrudge Rush his living–as long as his living does not diverge from my interest in getting as many red jackets as possible elected~~if we win majorities with vegetarian moderate men in red jackets or of raw red meat-eating Tea Party men in red jackets–it’s all the same to me–but I don’t want any losses–losses ruin my disposition–Bernie wrote earlier–and correctly–that our Party has an uncanny ability to lose races in which our horses are heavy favorites to win–no more–and I agree with Ramin–it is a strategic error to slam the door on Dr. Paul, Governor Palin or any other jockey in red jacket–we are supposed to be the big tent–and not lock our own people out of it–Ramin was right–Romney’s guys made a strategic decision to lock Paul and Palin out of the convention–and it cost them the White House–learn from our mistakes–to repeat Reagan–“never speak ill of another Republican”~~if they wear red they are our friend–if they wear blue–they are our enemy~~this ain’t higher math, kids~John Daniel Begg Public Affairs
~~~

Dear Tom and Bernie~~thanks for your input–Bernie–the men you venerate, Goldwater, Reagan, Laxalt–worked within the Party to make their branch of the Party dominant.  They were Party men.  The same dynamics existed in 1964 as they do today~~the dominant wing–led then by George Romney and Nelson Rockefeller was even more unkind and savage to Goldwater than are any of the Washington insider types who face down Tea Party, Dr.Paul, Palin and the rest of  right flank of the party today.

If you think as I do that we are, at a minimum, a centre-right nation–and likely right now further right than that in desire of a massive over correction against the Party of the incumbent Executive–so–back a guy who holds your views in the Party–there are many of us.

Goldwater won the nomination despite his being an outsider and things said of him then were very reminiscent of what is said of Tea Party and others today–said by both Democrats and George Romney and Nelson–but Goldwater won despite them all–and even though he lost the general election he paved the way for the eventual rise of Reagan who likewise remained to the end a Party man.

The major Parties are clean slates–get enough support for your guy–do the dogged, boring work necessary to get him nominated, use the priceless–on the ground in the districts and states–free labor of committed Party workers~~and take the White House and both chambers.
~~
Then~~we can do anything we want.~~
~~

There is nothing inherently evil or immoral about either of the Parties–if they are now run by men you don’t like–run a guy you do like–within the Party apparatus–as did Reagan, Goldwater and Laxalt.  There really is no realistic way to win any other way.~~and Tom Clark is, I must say, most correct here that if you choose to sit out the race altogether or support one of the peripheral Parties that virtually no one has ever heard of–it benefits the Democrats because they are always lock step behind their nominee~~we just lost a Governor out here in Virginia in large measure because the Libertarian took about 8%–well more than twice the spread of difference between the major Party standard bearers~~

For me–there is only one issue of consequence in this country right now~~

The rich man ought not be taxed at all~~he ought be compelled to employ the poor man~~directly~~

~~The principal need in America today is~~financial and industrial De-Globalization~~to facilitate the promotion of the possibility for the average man to get and keep a good job with good benefits paid by the employer~~as was done not very long ago.~~

If you ran a man–in either Party–whose platform was that–and only that–he would win in a landslide and his down ballot followers would do likewise~~John

Yours~~

Dear Bernie~~

There is no question that it is troubling to many here that Tea Party and other groups of a generically conservative populist tincture are very much disparaged by the Democrats~~understandably because they fear them so and know they will never have their support–but likewise by the Republicans~~who consider them to be ignorant rubes and nags.

This is troubling because nobody–except for a few here–would have ever heard Jake Boehner’s name had it not been for the Tea Party. I am personally very troubled by this dynamic here today at Washington, as it smacks of Royalism and its attendant notion that certain elite groups have taken it upon themselves to decide who the Americans ought to vote for.

Evidence how the polling men are already asking not “whom do you favor for President in 2016” and let you answer but rather~~ “OK, which of the these do you favor in 2016?”  It never appears to dawn on the polling men that the only thing the Americans would likely decide about all the choices given, if they even knew anything much about most of these putative candidates, is that the Americans would likely say that they can all go hang themselves.

That said, unless somebody who knows what’s what and can be forceful in the eye of the storm presents himself, the horses being loaded into starters gate by the press and the polling men, are likely to make up the field in 2016~~from which gate will very almost certainly spring the winner.  The only qualification for getting in starter’s gate seems to be a presentation and comparison of very dull, yet also, gaudy, resumes of what the horses going in the gate have accomplished here at Washington~notwithstanding that the Americans hate the Washington class.

All this is odd on a personal level as I met Mrs. Palin about 2 weeks before McCain trotted her out to meet the Americans and I remember thinking~~she has entirely to fetching a shape to her to waste on anything as dreary as politics.  I remember being alarmed at the fury with which the combined forces of Washington’s power groups became so instantly frantic to destroy her reputation~which they certainly succeeded in doing in spades.

What was generally said to me was “she’s so stupid,” a charge that at Washington ought to be used with great caution as the political men here and those in the press services are no big bargain in the brains department.  I remember thinking that they must be afraid of her as otherwise they would simply have ignored her.

One of the fellows in this group pointed finger at me and said “Begg–if that girl gets in, you are personally responsible.”  I think that says a lot in that many here at Washington really do think that we make the rules~which is, Royalism.  I told the fellow that “it is none of your business, or mine, who the Americans want to elect and if this girl gets in it will because the people wanted her.”

This maybe the crux of the trouble here~~a system of kingmakers, king breakers and little tin kings themselves.  This is not a pretty thought given the backgrounds of so many of the men here who prance around as though they were heir to the throne of England when in fact they arrived here many, many years ago from some nondescript part of America having failed at insurance selling or some such.

Harder yet to fathom the reporters~~members of a class that used to be exclusively filled with men with holes in their shoes and cheap pint of liquor in their back pockets.  All of a sudden, these groups are Royalty.

That aside, the Americans are a very disparate people–it would be hard to think who, if anyone, speaks for any appreciable number of them.  The better men from the better families have, particularly so after Romney, abandoned politics altogether~~and understandably so. Who, having anything in the way of social background, save perhaps the Bush family~~a mixed blessing~~would stand for office?

I do not pretend, as others here do that I know the American people in my bone marrow, but it seems to me that the men of Washington have, in the last 20 or so years, become, evermore ostentatiously, self-ordained experts on what the Americans want and need from their government–and likewise obsessed with stealing money–personally.

I do not think it overstatement to say that we have arrived in a place not unlike the America Jefferson looked out at in disquietude and remarked, particularly having seen a fair amount of Europe~~ “the people are pressed down by an aristocratic class and have no advantage except poverty and perpetual war.”  Sounds like home to me.

This observation, collectively agreed by the framers, led to revolution~~which is why I sence that another such revolution is fast coming here~~I very much don’t want that, as revolutions are invariably messy affairs, but I can’t see a way out~~save our finding a leader who will slice off some crowned heads around here.

Jefferson would, most assuredly, have been a Tea Party rabble-rouser because he so detested entrenched, codified, Royalist power.  Hence the title of this now labyrinthine essay in which we find ourselves called–“what would they make of us–our founders–if they saw how the government treats the American people today?”

A rather odd duck, and a terrible philosopher, summed up the attitude of official Washington as it is today constituted~comme ca~~

My point to you remains–this revolution can be run through one of the major Parties if we can somehow find the right men.

I can’t think the founders would be happy with us today.  No, not at all.

Yours,

John

Mr. Simon and I both seem to have arrived~~via rather different train lines~~at this rail platform~~America is in catharsis as to how best rid Herself of the surplus poor~~I have concluded that we do live a modern Tale of Two Cities and that the problem of the poor is to be solved by either bleeding them to death in the Arabian deserts or putting them up forever in massive prison complexes~~built mainly to house petty drug criminals~~there simply is no place for the poor~~and there never will be~~absent perhaps~~the arrival of Mr. Simon’s~~Brick~~

David Simon: ‘There are now two Americas. My country is a horror show’

The creator of The Wire, David Simon, delivered an impromptu speech about the divide between rich and poor in America at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney, and how capitalism has lost sight of its social compact. This is an edited extract~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
America is a country that is now utterly divided when it comes to its society, its economy, its politics. There are definitely two Americas. I live in one, on one block in Baltimore that is part of the viable America, the America that is connected to its own economy, where there is a plausible future for the people born into it. About 20 blocks away is another America entirely. It’s astonishing how little we have to do with each other, and yet we are living in such proximity.
There’s no barbed wire around West Baltimore or around East Baltimore, around Pimlico, the areas in my city that have been utterly divorced from the American experience that I know. But there might as well be. We’ve somehow managed to march on to two separate futures and I think you’re seeing this more and more in the west. I don’t think it’s unique to America.
I think we’ve perfected a lot of the tragedy and we’re getting there faster than a lot of other places that may be a little more reasoned, but my dangerous idea kind of involves this fellow who got left by the wayside in the 20th century and seemed to be almost the butt end of the joke of the 20th century; a fellow named Karl Marx.
I’m not a Marxist in the sense that I don’t think Marxism has a very specific clinical answer to what ails us economically. I think Marx was a much better diagnostician than he was a clinician. He was good at figuring out what was wrong or what could be wrong with capitalism if it wasn’t attended to and much less credible when it comes to how you might solve that.
You know if you’ve read Capital or if you’ve got the Cliff Notes, you know that his imaginings of how classical Marxism – of how his logic would work when applied – kind of devolve into such nonsense as the withering away of the state and platitudes like that. But he was really sharp about what goes wrong when capital wins unequivocally, when it gets everything it asks for.
That may be the ultimate tragedy of capitalism in our time, that it has achieved its dominance without regard to a social compact, without being connected to any other metric for human progress.
We understand profit. In my country we measure things by profit. We listen to the Wall Street analysts. They tell us what we’re supposed to do every quarter. The quarterly report is God. Turn to face God. Turn to face Mecca, you know. Did you make your number? Did you not make your number? Do you want your bonus? Do you not want your bonus?
And that notion that capital is the metric, that profit is the metric by which we’re going to measure the health of our society is one of the fundamental mistakes of the last 30 years. I would date it in my country to about 1980 exactly, and it has triumphed.
Capitalism stomped the hell out of Marxism by the end of the 20th century and was predominant in all respects, but the great irony of it is that the only thing that actually works is not ideological, it is impure, has elements of both arguments and never actually achieves any kind of partisan or philosophical perfection.
It’s pragmatic, it includes the best aspects of socialistic thought and of free-market capitalism and it works because we don’t let it work entirely. And that’s a hard idea to think – that there isn’t one single silver bullet that gets us out of the mess we’ve dug for ourselves. But man, we’ve dug a mess.
After the second world war, the west emerged with the American economy coming out of its wartime extravagance, emerging as the best product. It was the best product. It worked the best. It was demonstrating its might not only in terms of what it did during the war but in terms of just how facile it was in creating mass wealth.
Plus, it provided a lot more freedom and was doing the one thing that guaranteed that the 20th century was going to be – and forgive the jingoistic sound of this – the American century.
It took a working class that had no discretionary income at the beginning of the century, which was working on subsistence wages. It turned it into a consumer class that not only had money to buy all the stuff that they needed to live but enough to buy a bunch of shit that they wanted but didn’t need, and that was the engine that drove us.
It wasn’t just that we could supply stuff, or that we had the factories or know-how or capital, it was that we created our own demand and started exporting that demand throughout the west. And the standard of living made it possible to manufacture stuff at an incredible rate and sell it.
And how did we do that? We did that by not giving in to either side. That was the new deal. That was the great society. That was all of that argument about collective bargaining and union wages and it was an argument that meant neither side gets to win.
Labour doesn’t get to win all its arguments, capital doesn’t get to. But it’s in the tension, it’s in the actual fight between the two, that capitalism actually becomes functional, that it becomes something that every stratum in society has a stake in, that they all share.
The unions actually mattered. The unions were part of the equation. It didn’t matter that they won all the time, it didn’t matter that they lost all the time, it just mattered that they had to win some of the time and they had to put up a fight and they had to argue for the demand and the equation and for the idea that workers were not worth less, they were worth more.
Ultimately we abandoned that and believed in the idea of trickle-down and the idea of the market economy and the market knows best, to the point where now libertarianism in my country is actually being taken seriously as an intelligent mode of political thought. It’s astonishing to me. But it is. People are saying I don’t need anything but my own ability to earn a profit. I’m not connected to society. I don’t care how the road got built, I don’t care where the firefighter comes from, I don’t care who educates the kids other than my kids. I am me. It’s the triumph of the self. I am me, hear me roar.
That we’ve gotten to this point is astonishing to me because basically in winning its victory, in seeing that Wall come down and seeing the former Stalinist state’s journey towards our way of thinking in terms of markets or being vulnerable, you would have thought that we would have learned what works. Instead we’ve descended into what can only be described as greed. This is just greed. This is an inability to see that we’re all connected, that the idea of two Americas is implausible, or two Australias, or two Spains or two Frances.
Societies are exactly what they sound like. If everybody is invested and if everyone just believes that they have “some”, it doesn’t mean that everybody’s going to get the same amount. It doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be people who are the venture capitalists who stand to make the most. It’s not each according to their needs or anything that is purely Marxist, but it is that everybody feels as if, if the society succeeds, I succeed, I don’t get left behind. And there isn’t a society in the west now, right now, that is able to sustain that for all of its population.
And so in my country you’re seeing a horror show. You’re seeing a retrenchment in terms of family income, you’re seeing the abandonment of basic services, such as public education, functional public education. You’re seeing the underclass hunted through an alleged war on dangerous drugs that is in fact merely a war on the poor and has turned us into the most incarcerative state in the history of mankind, in terms of the sheer numbers of people we’ve put in American prisons and the percentage of Americans we put into prisons. No other country on the face of the Earth jails people at the number and rate that we are.
We have become something other than what we claim for the American dream and all because of our inability to basically share, to even contemplate a socialist impulse.
Socialism is a dirty word in my country. I have to give that disclaimer at the beginning of every speech, “Oh by the way I’m not a Marxist you know”. I lived through the 20th century. I don’t believe that a state-run economy can be as viable as market capitalism in producing mass wealth. I don’t.
I’m utterly committed to the idea that capitalism has to be the way we generate mass wealth in the coming century. That argument’s over. But the idea that it’s not going to be married to a social compact, that how you distribute the benefits of capitalism isn’t going to include everyone in the society to a reasonable extent, that’s astonishing to me.
And so capitalism is about to seize defeat from the jaws of victory all by its own hand. That’s the astonishing end of this story, unless we reverse course. Unless we take into consideration, if not the remedies of Marx then the diagnosis, because he saw what would happen if capital triumphed unequivocally, if it got everything it wanted.
And one of the things that capital would want unequivocally and for certain is the diminishment of labour. They would want labour to be diminished because labour’s a cost. And if labour is diminished, let’s translate that: in human terms, it means human beings are worth less.
From this moment forward unless we reverse course, the average human being is worth less on planet Earth. Unless we take stock of the fact that maybe socialism and the socialist impulse has to be addressed again; it has to be married as it was married in the 1930s, the 1940s and even into the 1950s, to the engine that is capitalism.
Mistaking capitalism for a blueprint as to how to build a society strikes me as a really dangerous idea in a bad way. Capitalism is a remarkable engine again for producing wealth. It’s a great tool to have in your toolbox if you’re trying to build a society and have that society advance. You wouldn’t want to go forward at this point without it. But it’s not a blueprint for how to build the just society. There are other metrics besides that quarterly profit report.
The idea that the market will solve such things as environmental concerns, as our racial divides, as our class distinctions, our problems with educating and incorporating one generation of workers into the economy after the other when that economy is changing; the idea that the market is going to heed all of the human concerns and still maximise profit is juvenile. It’s a juvenile notion and it’s still being argued in my country passionately and we’re going down the tubes. And it terrifies me because I’m astonished at how comfortable we are in absolving ourselves of what is basically a moral choice. Are we all in this together or are we all not?
If you watched the debacle that was, and is, the fight over something as basic as public health policy in my country over the last couple of years, imagine the ineffectiveness that Americans are going to offer the world when it comes to something really complicated like global warming. We can’t even get healthcare for our citizens on a basic level. And the argument comes down to: “Goddamn this socialist president. Does he think I’m going to pay to keep other people healthy? It’s socialism, motherfucker.”
What do you think group health insurance is? You know you ask these guys, “Do you have group health insurance where you …?” “Oh yeah, I get …” you know, “my law firm …” So when you get sick you’re able to afford the treatment.
The treatment comes because you have enough people in your law firm so you’re able to get health insurance enough for them to stay healthy. So the actuarial tables work and all of you, when you do get sick, are able to have the resources there to get better because you’re relying on the idea of the group. Yeah. And they nod their heads, and you go “Brother, that’s socialism. You know it is.”
And … you know when you say, OK, we’re going to do what we’re doing for your law firm but we’re going to do it for 300 million Americans and we’re going to make it affordable for everybody that way. And yes, it means that you’re going to be paying for the other guys in the society, the same way you pay for the other guys in the law firm … Their eyes glaze. You know they don’t want to hear it. It’s too much. Too much to contemplate the idea that the whole country might be actually connected.
So I’m astonished that at this late date I’m standing here and saying we might want to go back for this guy Marx that we were laughing at, if not for his prescriptions, then at least for his depiction of what is possible if you don’t mitigate the authority of capitalism, if you don’t embrace some other values for human endeavour.
And that’s what The Wire was about basically, it was about people who were worth less and who were no longer necessary, as maybe 10 or 15% of my country is no longer necessary to the operation of the economy. It was about them trying to solve, for lack of a better term, an existential crisis. In their irrelevance, their economic irrelevance, they were nonetheless still on the ground occupying this place called Baltimore and they were going to have to endure somehow.
That’s the great horror show. What are we going to do with all these people that we’ve managed to marginalise? It was kind of interesting when it was only race, when you could do this on the basis of people’s racial fears and it was just the black and brown people in American cities who had the higher rates of unemployment and the higher rates of addiction and were marginalised and had the shitty school systems and the lack of opportunity.
And kind of interesting in this last recession to see the economy shrug and start to throw white middle-class people into the same boat, so that they became vulnerable to the drug war, say from methamphetamine, or they became unable to qualify for college loans. And all of a sudden a certain faith in the economic engine and the economic authority of Wall Street and market logic started to fall away from people. And they realised it’s not just about race, it’s about something even more terrifying. It’s about class. Are you at the top of the wave or are you at the bottom?
So how does it get better? In 1932, it got better because they dealt the cards again and there was a communal logic that said nobody’s going to get left behind. We’re going to figure this out. We’re going to get the banks open. From the depths of that depression a social compact was made between worker, between labour and capital that actually allowed people to have some hope.
We’re either going to do that in some practical way when things get bad enough or we’re going to keep going the way we’re going, at which point there’s going to be enough people standing on the outside of this mess that somebody’s going to pick up a brick, because you know when people get to the end there’s always the brick. I hope we go for the first option but I’m losing faith.
The other thing that was there in 1932 that isn’t there now is that some element of the popular will could be expressed through the electoral process in my country.
The last job of capitalism – having won all the battles against labour, having acquired the ultimate authority, almost the ultimate moral authority over what’s a good idea or what’s not, or what’s valued and what’s not – the last journey for capital in my country has been to buy the electoral process, the one venue for reform that remained to Americans.
Right now capital has effectively purchased the government, and you witnessed it again with the healthcare debacle in terms of the $450m that was heaved into Congress, the most broken part of my government, in order that the popular will never actually emerged in any of that legislative process.
So I don’t know what we do if we can’t actually control the representative government that we claim will manifest the popular will. Even if we all start having the same sentiments that I’m arguing for now, I’m not sure we can effect them any more in the same way that we could at the rise of the Great Depression, so maybe it will be the brick. But I hope not.
David Simon is an American author and journalist and was the executive producer of The Wire. This is an edited extract of a talk delivered at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney.
We are American~we can do anything we like~so, for starters~ let’s de-globalize~
Man_Holding_World_Globe_Color85458
A little orb~~all set to be De~Globalized~~
We are told that the world is Globalized~~well~~it can be De-Globalized~~the shift to Globalization did not come down from any holy mountaintop~~it was ordained of man and can be undone by man.  America, though now weakened, accounts for 26% of world GDP~~we can do anything we want~~what is lacking is clear vision, a specific program and a Leader~~a Moses.~~
America needs now a~~ Moses~~A leader who can be very brutal~~neither Reagan nor Jack Kennedy~the best of our lifetimes~~could do this job~~they were too nice~~our enemies are not nice~~so~~our Moses must be prepared to be brutal when it comes to De-Globalization.
Reversing this is simple if you understand finance and can be very, very brusque and rough~~you simply make the financiers and corporate chieftains bring the jobs home~~one way or the other~~either friendly and easy~~in exchange for tax incentives~~or nasty and hard–in the form on import tariffs~~which the left would love but I don’t care~~this is not about what is labeled left or right~~it is about what is needed~~to me there is one issue from which all other initiatives must generate~~bringing back good paying permanent jobs to America~~that is the sine qua~~nothing else matters~~likewise everything else flows from a happy, well employed American populace~~
I think~they might just want to rejoin The Empire~~
It is a tellingly sad paradox that the very embodiment of the Founding Father’s dream for the perfect American President is:
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 of England~a dutiful, friendly, benign, sober, attentive, solicitous and powerless~Head of State.
Meanwhile, American Presidents themselves are gaudy, boorish, imperialistic, rapaciously grasping after both power and gold, preeningly and personally selfish, egotistical, tyrannical, war~mongering despots~a tellingly sad paradox.
Will we just continue to let the Fed and other central banks pursue this policy?
As I say~~the predicate justification for intemperate monetary policy is that the policy is necessary to avoid our going into a depression~~an argument line that can be neither proved nor disproved.  The logical extension of this argument line is that in the near term we are faced with two disastrous options~~to continue loose money policy~~or to go into a depression~~neither option elicits smiles on a winter Monday morning.~~
In fact~~it gets worse~~if it is accepted central bank logic that we have only these two choices~~then we can never tighten monetary policy because who is the fellow at Washington who wants to be the next Mr. Hoover~~a man who had absolutely nothing to do with causing the Great Depression~~but a man who is, nonetheless, blamed for it?
"Jean-Marie Le Pen is a friend. He is dangerous for the political set because he's the only one who's sincere. He says out loud what many people think deep down, and what the politicians refrain from saying because they are either too demagogic or too chicken. Le Pen, with all his faults and qualities, is probably the only one who thinks about the interests of France before his own."~~
