Barbara Tuckman’s “The Guns of August” says all what needs to be said and does so most eloquently of the run up to the Great War that utterly ended civilization.
That said: Trying to suss out the causes and villains of the Great War misses the only point of salience:
That point is that:
The Great War ended civilization.
Every moment since has simply seen an increase in the velocity of societal collapse into murder, war, anarchy, mayhem and barbarism.
Society and civilization won’t be back.
They are both gone.
Forever.
Schoolboys learn that:
“The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time,” British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey may have remarked on the eve of Britain’s entry into the Great World War.
Regardless whether Lord Grey had in fact made such a statement then, it has earned wide currency and attention as an expression of popular
perception of the First World War.
Lord Grey massively understated things in this sense:
The lamps of civilized life will never be lit again.
- At Washington, capital city of the terminally self-absorbed, mortal man holds to fleeting, feeble and fallible opinion, God immutable fact.
