The song begins by posing a rhetorical question as to whether it is right that old times be forgotten, and is generally interpreted as a call to remember long-standing friendships.^[9]Thomson’s Select Songs of Scotland was published in 1799 in which the second verse about greeting and toasting was moved to its present position at the end.^[9]

Most common use of the song involves only the first verse and the chorus. The last lines of both of these are often sung with the extra words “For the sake of” or “And days of”, rather than Burns’ simpler lines. This allows one note for each word, rather than the slight melisma required to fit Burns’ original words to the melody.

John Begg – Shinbashi

Here is the second post on another great little bar in the Shimbashi neighborhood of Tokyo. We stumbled into this place when I had planned to go to Susie’s but found it closed. John Begg sits right next door, and it’s sign is quite a bit more prominent and inviting than Susie’s. I should start off by saying that regrettably I did not take any pictures at John Begg, so I shamelessly clipped these off the internet. To the Japanese reviewer who took them, I hope you do not mind!

John Begg was a Scotsman from Aberdeen. He started the New Loughnagar Distillery in the 1845, and as a result of receiving the “Royal Warrant of Appointment” as a supplier to the Queen (Victoria) he changed the name to Royal Loughnagar Distillery. John Begg passed away in 1880, and the company was later acquired by John Dewar Ltd and Sons in 1916. Today the company is still going strong as part of the massive holdings of the beverage giant Diageo.

While the origins of John Begg Whiskey are well documented, how this John Begg bar came about in Shinbashi remains a bit of a mystery. What I can tell you is the place is run by a Mama-san who has been tending to this same establishment for quite a long time (40-50 years?). It is my understanding that this bar originated in 1949. My guess is that not much inside has changed since. It is a much bigger place than Susie’s next door, but before you think it must be large, please don’t forget you had to turn sideways when you walked into Susie’s. John Begg is small. A very nice curved wood bar fronts around 6 or so stools along the right side of the room.

To the left is a seating area with three small sections that can seat around 9 at the most. A few comfortable looking very small couch type pieces along with a few stools. That’s it. What makes this place so cool is the decor, both behind and on the bar as well as on the walls. It is tasteful, old, and classy. There is a very large painting of the Mama-san when she was young. A very beautiful lady, both then as well as now.

John Begg has many different liquors but seems to specialize in Whiskey. Begg’s brand is of course the “house pour”, and I would recommend the 12 year old Royal Loughnagar Single Malt, which was quite tasty. Two capable and experienced barmen tend very professionally to the drinks. The service is first rate. One speaks a little bit of English, which was very helpful (I did not have my Japanese co-workers along for this adventure). The place had some classic looking coasters seen here.

Go to John Begg if you want to relax and go back in time. Enjoy the serenity of the place, the nice service, and the fine cocktails. The craziness of Shinbashi is outside all around you, but within these walls you can escape. You can enjoy. There is a Ginza feel here, which is only a few blocks away.

I hope to return to this place with some of my Japanese friends so I can find out more about it from the Mama-san. Shinbashi, Tokyo and the world needs more places like John Begg. Search them out before they are gone forever, like Susie’s next door.

IN ONE WORD: Kindheartedness

Exposition~~

So many laudatory things have been written about President Reagan by others that I will simply say here that the character trait he best exemplified of which I made personal note of was his kindheartedness.

This attribute was best dramatized by his personal correspondence. All Presidents write letters to American citizens who’ve written them for various reasons that are hand selected by staff for response. Most are composed and auto-penned out at lowly clerical level and never seen by the President.

President Reagan took pains to write his notes personally, by hand and the subjects addressed were of many different kinds~~often very intimate and touching upon the long nights of the soul through which we are all destined to eventually go. He cared for people and was fascinated by them~~on a personal, one-on-one basis.

Often, he would put a bit of money in the envelope to a writer who was down on his luck~~designed to accompany his note of encouragement. He was a gentleman~~in the purest sense of that term.

Sui Generis.

He broke the mold.~

The mold is broken.~

He was a great leader to be sure~~but all that sort has been covered by others many times in other venues. I remember what might strike the reader as a comparatively small matter

~~I remember President Reagan’s kindheartedness.

That trait was twin brother to his boundless optimism and both were very real and visceral and they resonated with people directly, tangibly, personally.

He and I were of like mind that charity–caring for one’s fellow man~~is one’s personal responsibility~~not to be fobbed off on the government or the Church~~he believed as do I~~that caring for the sad, the poor, the misbegotten, is one’s personal responsibility and, in sharing that belief, he is a most fond memory.

He was inspirational.

Simply.

Inspirational.

Dear Friends of our School Children,

During this holy season, I would like to take the opportunity to share with you information about a cause that is close to my heart.

Even in the best of circumstances, growing up can present real challenges. For inner-city school children, these challenges are multiplied many times over, and are often overwhelming.

Inner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF) helps to remove the fundamental challenge of getting a good education in a safe, secure environment in New York City by providing families with demonstrable financial need the opportunity to give their children a quality, values-based K-12 Catholic school education.

Nearly 70% of the students – both Catholic and not – enrolled in the 79 inner-city elementary and secondary schools served by the Archdiocese of New York come from homes living at or below the federal poverty line. The average scholarship recipient’s family income is approximately $24,000 per year. Over 50% of the students attending inner-city Catholic schools in the archdiocese come from single-parent households.

Despite these impediments, our Catholic schools – in partnership with ICSF donors of all faiths – enable our students and their families to overcome enormous odds and break the cycle of poverty through education.

Fully 98% of seniors from ICSF-supported high schools graduate, and 96% of those graduates pursue higher education at colleges and universities across the nation. A scholarship for one of these inner-city school children can radically change his or her life, and that of their family, for future generations.

In addition to being oases of stability and sanity, our schools fundamentally alter the course of thousands of students’ lives by offering them the only tool proven to help lift people out of poverty: an education.

We are proud of our programs’ high graduation rates and the percentage of our graduates who go on to pursue a college education. But these statistics only reveal a small part of what a Catholic education means.

Statistics can’t capture the Catholic high school junior who commutes three hours round trip every day to get an education that will give her real options for her future, or the Catholic school alumnus who’s the first in his family to graduate college.

Statistics can’t describe to you the single mother who lacks a high school diploma but works two full-time jobs to raise enough money to pay tuition so that her young son will have a better life than she ever imagined.

Statistics can’t communicate the inspiration that motivates a young couple – just starting to have children of their own – to stretch themselves financially so that they can sponsor a Catholic school education for a child less fortunate than their own.

ICSF scholarships are available for needy students of all faiths. In fact, 36% of ICSF students are not Catholic and 93% are minorities – 53% Hispanic, 30% African American, 7% White, 4% Asian, 4% multiracial, and 2% of other backgrounds.

We believe that ICSF, with the help of individuals like you, has the power to transform lives.

Each of the 30,700 inner-city students attending ICSF-supported schools are exceptional — they are exceptions to the rule that says growing up in poverty limits what you can achieve. It is a truly incredible story we are proud of because we want to continue transforming the lives of these young people.

ICSF exists to ensure that the gift of an excellent Catholic school education continues to be a viable option for current and future generations of students of all faiths.

Last year, we had to tell thousands of students who applied for scholarships to Catholic schools that, for them, a scholarship was not available. Currently, 5,000 seats are available in our Catholic schools— that’s 5,000 life-changing opportunities waiting to be taken advantage of with our donors’ help!

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis lauded Jesus’ humble beginning as a poor and vulnerable baby as he celebrated his first Christmas Eve Mass as pontiff Tuesday in St. Peter’s Basilica.

“You are immense, and you made yourself small; you are rich, and you made yourself poor; you are all-powerful and you made yourself vulnerable,” Francis said of Jesus as he delivered his homily in the basilica, packed with faithful.

Francis has dedicated much of his nine-month-old papacy to drawing attention to the plight of the poor, of children, and other vulnerable members of society.

He noted that the first to receive news of Jesus’ birth were shepherds, who in society were considered “among the last, the outcast.”

Francis, who turned 77 a week ago, walked briskly up the main aisle of the basilica for the ceremony, which began Tuesday 2 ½ hours before midnight. Keeping with the theme of humility he has set for his new papacy, Francis carried the statue instead of an aide, and kissed a knee of the figure of the newly born Jesus.

The occasional wail of babies in the basilica contrasted at times with the sweet voices of the choir.

The Argentine-born pope has also encouraged his flock to be a joyful church, and he called Jesus’ “the light who brightens the darkness.”

In the world’s history and our own personal history, Francis said, “there are both bright and dark moments, lights and shadows. ” He added “if our heart is closed, if we are dominated by pride, deceit, self-seeking, then darkness falls within us and around us.”

Francis has applied this same vision to the heart of the Vatican’s own working, saying in past remarks there is no place for person ambition in the clerical hierarchy. Rather, he has insisted, the Catholic church must be one of service to those in need.

Earlier, in the Holy Land, thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world packed the West Bank town of Bethlehem for Christmas Eve celebrations, bringing warm holiday cheer to the biblical birthplace of Jesus on a cool, clear night.

The heavy turnout, its highest in years, helped lift spirits in Bethlehem as leaders expressed hope that the coming year would finally bring the Palestinians an independent state of their own.

“The message of Christmas is a message of peace, love and brotherhood. We have to be brothers with each other,” said Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, as he arrived in town.

At the Vatican, the basilica ceremony is the pope’s only public Mass for Christmas. On Wednesday, Christmas Day, Francis will deliver his Christmas message, meant for the world, from the basilica’s central balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square.

The Democrats on Christmas~~seem to be making a big hit with the kiddies~~

Dear Mary~~

I write 4-5 articles a day on myriad topics~~I am not a reporter~~I am an essayist~~one such yesterday took on the evolutionists in favor of the creationists and I did put girls in it~~as I felt that pretty girls provided a stark graphic to the notion that mankind evolved from the muck and the mire as amoeba–without God’s direct intervention.

One of the many joys of being Republican is that we get to speak plainly and state what we think without fear or favor to any man and not to worry about the endless line editing- as to avoid offending anyone- that captivates lesser mortals.

I am sure as a young girl you likely dated, or at least knew, Republican boys~who say to girls “If I love you~it’s none of your business.”

Now old, I think likely of writing “what I write is none of your business~~my product is not a collective effort with the reader–it is there to enjoy or set aside as you wish”~

I personally think that if the principal reason to write or say anything–is to not possibly offend anyone–then let’s not write or say anything at all.

Were Democrats taken seriously we would become a society of deaf-mutes.

As I am pretty prolific, and cover so many topics–I get line edited to death by nearly everyone. I tell the line editors–“You are the reader–I am the writer–if you don’t like what I write–don’t read it”

Mrs Begg doesn’t like the use of girlie pictures to make points in my articles either and so, she and I have agreed– she just won’t read them.

I am thought by some to be one of the very few men at this city who brings different and interesting perspectives to an otherwise tedious, robotic and listless place–yesterday for instance I wrote this–as I think we need a President who is humble and as uninvolved as possible in American life–in another office–an American Pope Francis~~in another guise.~~ Comme ca~

It’s to do with night trousers~~

It is the high winter season and~~I’m so sorry~~but~~we must disagree as to evening clothes on one point~~at which our paths diverge~~

I always wear 1&3/4″ cuffs on my evening trousers–when I was very young I was at table fairly often with the Prince Ali Khan and he wore silk gray calf-length check socks and 1&3/4″ cuffs and full forward pleats~~and always a flower in his jacket~~with his evening clothes~~and His Day Grays as well~~I asked him the inches.~~

The Playboy Prince Aly was related to many celebrities before meeting Rita Hayworth,
such as Gene Tierney, Maria Callas, or Yvonne De Carlo and was an avid horse
race investor creating the world famous Ispahan tournament. Rita’s marriage to
Aly Khan led to a daughter Yasmin and made world headlines.

I followed His lead with night trousers and many other habits~~as he was a Prince and as He was Italian~~as am I~~both from our mothers~~

Prince was a great sportsman and was always out on the town at Washington with Jackie Kennedy and her girlfriends~~we’d known Jack and his family for a long time~~and he never seemed to go out socially with Jackie–ever~~and this was a good bit before Jack was President~~

Prince Ali Khan was a fairly wild boy~~in particular as to girls~~ but very funny–and a professional racing jockey and an avid racing car driver~~a sport that proved out his undoing~~as he drove like a madman and while he had his mechanic in the car~~he insisted on taking the wheel~~banishing the mechanic to the back seat~~and died in a terrible crash at Paris.

Many tailors are startled that I wear cuffs at night~~once one said to me~~

“Sir~~it is not my place to offer advice to you..”

I said “Then~~don’t.”

I think old Albert was onto something there~~I do~~

The Americans have yet to wake up to the fact that well over a decade ago~~they left the Age of Information~~and entered instead~~the Age of Imagination~~the trouble is~~so few have any imagination to put to use in this new age~~

The Americans have all the computer boxes and gadgets of the earlier information age~~but have nothing of any interest to say on the boxes~~oh, dear me~~I wonder if one of these computer box fellas can come up with a box that injects imaginative capacity into the veins of the Americans~~

Of which~~consider~~if you’ve the stomach for it~~

Politics in America~~

Presently~~

Politics is the art~~can that possibly be the right word~~of the insistent avoidance of using man’s creative imagination~~to the point that the least imaginative man is odds-on bound to win election~~

Why don’t the Americans do something else instead at their next election in 2016~~

For Instance~~

Instead~~how about running~~and electing~~a fella who has but one policy~~

To bring good jobs home to all the Americans~~

How about a non-politician who says to you this~~

Bringing good jobs for all back to America~~

The role of the President is very simple.

The President’s job is not to interfere, or even comment, upon much of the comings and goings of American life. Most of American life is none of his business. He is not a preacher or a reformer.

His job is~~principally~~limited to these underlining duties~~

To~~

Protect the citizens, facilitate commerce and leave the people the hell alone~~

Of those three policies~~imagine a President who will~~

~~As the great comedian Jimmy Durante used to say~~ “Leave the people the hell alone.”~~

Let’s use our collective imagination and elect a President who limits his involvement in American live to simply bringing good jobs back to America~~and protecting the people.

“Leave the people the hell alone”~an exploratory committee 2016 now begins~~testing this proposition~~

That a man who has never held any office will win office in a massive landslide if~~he simply sticks to this platform alone~~

I likewise think that the butterfly who stung like a bee was onto something there, too~~I Do~~
