Why don’t junkies simply drink like normal people?

Addiction: A young woman prepares to inject heroin as she sits cross-legged on the sidewalk

I never could understand the attraction of that needle.

To be sure, everybody needs to get his head up now and then, but why that needle?

When Clarkes took this image, the woman suddenly stretched out her arms, as if crucified by her addiction

Why don’t junkies simply drink like everybody else?

Drink takes you where you want to go, is relatively inexpensive, readily available and legal.

Most pressingly, you have a general idea just what you’re ingesting with that bottle, an assurance you simply never have with that needle.

More so yet, you don’t risk 20 years in prison for getting happy for a bit.

“I’m Waiting For The Man”
By Lou Reed
lou reed
I’m waiting for my man
Twenty-six dollars in my hand
Up to Lexington, 125
Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive
I’m waiting for my man
Hey, white boy, what you doin’ uptown?
Hey, white boy, you chasin’ our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it’s the furthest from my mind
I’m just lookin’ for a dear, dear friend of mine
I’m waiting for my man
Here he comes, he’s all dressed in black
Beat up shoes and a big straw hat
He’s never early, he’s always late
First thing you learn is you always gotta wait I’m waiting for my man
Up to a Brownstone, up three flights of stairs
Everybody’s pinned you, but nobody cares
He’s got the works, gives you sweet taste
Ah then you gotta split because you got no time to waste
I’m waiting for my man
Baby don’t you holler, darlin’ don’t you bawl and shout
I’m feeling good, you know I’m gonna work it on out
I’m feeling good, I’m feeling oh so fine
Until tomorrow, but that’s just some other time
I’m waiting for my man

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic parochial school, called, by anyone of any background, simply: “Chan~al,” a place where, of an autumn day in 1957, school,  for me,  began and ended in the first convening of the first grade in which a tiny nun, one Sister Dom Bosco, appeared before me, just behind the window appearing at far left of this photograph, and piped out this: “I may be small, but so then, is the Atom Bomb.”
My determination to escape school commenced immediately on hearing about this Atom Bomb business and took 16 dicey and arduous years to finally accomplish.~~

"Jean-Marie Le Pen is a friend. He is dangerous for the political set because he's the only one who's sincere. He says out loud what many people think deep down, and what the politicians refrain from saying because they are either too demagogic or too chicken. Le Pen, with all his faults and qualities, is probably the only one who thinks about the interests of France before his own."~~

  1. My very last band played at a private party at Reed’s ex-wife’s house in Blairstown, NJ, about 15 years ago or so. He reportedly left a decent amount of money and investments when he died. I was superficially enamored by the punk movement back at St Pete’s in JC around the late 70’s and had met a few of these characters while partying with underground music journalists… wondering, when i get into my 30’s if i too would still be a drug-riddled punk hanging out in hollowed-out brownstones downtown in the E Village. Then i figured out that these things are better left to the entertainment world. But that didn’t happen until late 1988, when i had no choice but to quit an earlier popular band i was with on the night of a huge and important show in NYC because i decided that hugging a toilet at 5am praying to die before my 30th birthday was really no damned fun and not what i went to college to waste people’s money for…

In AA, they call this the “head-pops-out-of-ass” moment. I am extremely indebted to them, tho i do like my bourbon these days… much more quietly. 🙂

Thanks for this brilliant post, as always.

    • Apropos of drugs and by derivation, drinking, I wrote this at seminary many, many years ago.

“Drinking is something that must be done judiciously or not all. No man can tell another man if the other man is using drugs or drink judiciously. That is a question each man has to sort out for himself deep inside himself, deep inside his soul: Can I drink judiciously? If the answer is no, admit it bravely and do not drink at all.”
